New SSN Thread (Non-PRC, Non-US)

sigh i have posted all of them in the indian miltary news thread
as and when the news were released .
can't go hunting links and news every time a member who hasn't read it.asks for it
this is the wrong thread,
but the gov. had said shipbuilders(within a month,but they haven't released who it will be) and submarines will be identified, a long time back.

i beleive the submarines are going to be russian.( there were quite a number of hints in the past)

The above article basically sums up where things were in July 2014 and how things tend to slowly moved through the Indian bureaucratic system.

I am not asking for links but a description and summary of where things are currently. For example, India typically has a formalised approach to its acquisition. The problem is that it is a rather convulated process interlaced with periods of inactivity especially whenever it changes government. The most at risk is the indigenous program - both diesel and nuclear.

Get back on topic.

As to the six SSNs...it is good news that India is committing to a number and a program specifically for the SSNs...they need them and they need to build indigenous ones.

But...it is clearly going to take some time.

In the mean time a new Carrier is going to come out in 2018 and I do not believe we will see an indigenous Indian SSN before then...so this just adds more fuel to the fire for India to get that second Akula SSN to help bridge the gap.

And the Arihant is no where near the size of the Akula II Chakra. An Akula II displaces 13,400 tons submerged, and is about 375 feet long. The Arihant displaces maybe a little over 8,000 tons submerged, and is about 360 feet long.

This does not mean that the Arihant hull form will not make for a decent SSN...it is just not as heavy as an Akula II.

as for the indigenous submarines, they already have the arihant hull ,which is about as small as the akula. the only thing they need to improve is the reactor

but the aridhman will be out in the sea by around 2019 with an improved reactor.

If I understand India's nuclear submarine plan, the goal is acquire 6 SSN's in addition to the SSBM. Assuming India can renew the lease on the INS Chakra and add another to the lease from the Russians, it still leaves 4 to be built locally. What is the program for the locally build SSN's besides assuming it would somehow be based off the Arihant hull?

I understood that the plan was to build six indigenous SSN boats in addition to the Chakra and a second Akula.

I do not believe there is any doubt that the Indians will renew the lease on the Chakra. As I understand it, that has already been worked out as a part of the deal. If they get a second one, I believe the same will hold...two ten year leases, with the second ten year a virtual certainty.
