There are other reasons too why they do it - like making the cover photos more interesting and the issue of public display of serial nos.

LOL. I can see with my own eyes under magnification that they are different.

Huh? And how is that? The missiles are correctly and exactly placed in proportion to the slats in both planes.

Look. All the digits look smudged and that's because of the low contrast orange set against a low contrast blue. I've seen this in every picture not just on J-10s, but on everything like J-7s to J-8IIs to J-11s and JH-7As. I guess this is the reason why the PLAAF chose this color. When the same planes had dark blue or red color for the digits, the serials come out a lot sharper.

I just think you are just in a witch hunt. It's like people who are preset to believe in witches or Nostradamus, nothing you can say can change their mind. Despite having no clear evidence and the presence of rational explanations otherwise.

By the way, that picture comes from a magazine. Some cosmetic cleanup may be involved but that does not interfere with the theme of the picture.

If there is a real issue in the public display of serial nos., they can always delete it as they have done so many times in the past. They obviously don't have that issue now because these are now cleared by the censors and for public consumption. Future J-10 orbat and deployment are the ones currently being kept secret for now.

the short range missile mounted in the outer wing, may be air to air simulation .I recall in the 90's a picture of pakistani AF J-7 carry similiar equipment in the missile pylon, below the picture stated that the aircraft carrying air to air simulator.

The reason why the J-10 and the FC-1 carries dummies all the time is that their aerodynamics are optimized around having two missiles. This is a trick originally used by F-16s and also used by F-18s. As a result, these aircraft fly best having missiles, dummy or otherwise, loaded on their wings.

It really doesn't work as well on the J-7.
