Not for now, these are from my cellphone. My wife's phone has more, but she's still in China right now. She's also got our camera. :)

I went to Hami. Interesting that you should ask about the security measures. I debated taking a picture of the PAP squad at the train station, but decided it wasn't worth the possibility of trouble. Those guys were armed with assault rifles and frickin' bayonets! Bayonets!

The regular police had some kind of shield + staff/spear setup. Wonder if they got training in phalanx formation? :D

Funnily enough, the PAP were gone when I went to the train station at night.

Also, every mall entrance had a metal detector, but everybody just walked through it. The posted guard looked bored and didn't even care.

I think Hami is considered "Northern Xinjiang", which is safer than Southern Xinjiang. I am really interested in the shield (riot shield???) + spear setup. How long are those? Do they have actual spear points? I would think that a baton/shield setup would make more sense.

Yes, they're riot shields. It's really too bad that I didn't take any pictures. The "spear" is kind of a long baton, about the height of a man, and tapering to a point at one end. The point is not "knife-sharp", but still quite pointy.

I found a pic here:
