The only reason why they picked Robert Pattinson to be Batman is hoping they can get the Twi-hards to go watch it. It's ironic because women are always saying movies made for guys are dumb yet young female fans aren't even interested in any sort of story. They watch movies just for the star. The backlash against Star Wars shows how longtime Star Wars fans aren't as loyal in the eyes of studios. There's less risk banking on a popular star with a proven fanbase than writing a good story as important to the success of a movie.

I'm following an awesome new Chinese series, called "The Longest Day in Chang'An". It's on Amazon Prime.

This is a new series about, in ancient China of the Tang dynasty (~600 A.D.), officials trying to hunt down a band of terrorists who attempt to burn down the then capital city of Chang'An on the day of the Lantern festival (15 days after the Chinese New Year). This is a similar type of suspense/thriller as "24", and is based on a famous Chinese novel.

It is not only a very exciting and thrilling story, but also a superbly acted drama. The series employs an excellent blend of young and good-looking stars and highly experienced actors. Very well-made series.

Additionally, the author of the original book and the director of the series took pain to make the series as authentic as they possibly could. They researched everything down to the kind of sewage used back in the Tang dynasty, as well as the kind of dried mint chewed by one of the officers. For makeup, clothing and everything else (even the way they greet each other) that is happening in the series, they gave up all the stylish stuff and went with everything authentic based on the paintings, pottery and literature of the same era. For the look of the whole entire city, they based everything on historical literature and architectural books describing what Chang'An looked like in the Tang dynasty.

Even the fight scenes are very authentic. No more wire-fu and all the flying and stylish kicking and stuff. Almost all the fight scenes look like street fights with solid punches and kicks. A lot of authentic wrestling moves.

The Tang dynasty has been widely considered to be at the height of the ancient Chinese civilization, in terms of military might, economy, culture, etc. Chang'An, being the capital city, was a full-fledged international metropolitan with over 1 million population and a large population of foreign residents from Europe, Mid-East and other parts of Asia. Because of the authenticity of the series, if you are interested in seeing what Chang'An looked like at its prime, go watch the series.

Cool. I will have to go check it out. I spend a lot of time in Xi'an and went to school there. We used to walk around the area North of the (old) Train Station and marvel at the mounds that used to be Daming Palace. It was quite the kick coming back after so many years away and seeing they had cleared away the villages there and started to unearth the old palace (about 2x the size of the Forbidden City in Beijing). Highly recommend a trip there if you can.

Shanghai Fortress is out in Netflix.

This movie flopped at the Chinese box office and the director had to make a formal apology to the public. Now that I have lowered your expectations, go enjoy.

So just how bad is it? I don't want to waste two hours of my life if I can avoid it.

SFX earns a five star. But the plot was cheesy and predictable, a bit patronizing. Characters flat with bad acting. So basically B movie grade scifi movie with polished SFX.

"Lord of Rings" TV series is coming to Amazon Prime.

"Back in 2017 when news of the show broke, Deadline reported that Amazon reportedly paid close to $250 million for the rights, making it the most expensive TV series ever. That doesn't, of course, include the money it'll cost to hire the actors and crew and actually make the sure-to-be-pricey show. The Hollywood Reporter speculates that the whole shebang could cost more than $1 billion."
