Script quality or special effects?

For 2017 movies the special effects are still incomplete. There bound to be some re-shoots as well. Script quality is another matter.

Dialogue and script from what I've been gather from the trailer. Have to keep in mind that trailers are generally poor indicators of the actual film quality though. With that in mind, I'll keep my hopes up.

The Great Wall trailer.

Looks great. Will the story match it is the question. Supposedly the monsters are based on Chinese mythology. Anyone have an idea what it is from the small glimpse of them in this trailer.

Looks like a pure-fantasy film. Couldn't tell what the monsters are but spotted triple-bow siegecrossbows, trebuchets, and gunpowder-based fire-arrows.

Interesting! The trailer looks good.

As to what kind of monsters, no clue yet. They must have to be land-based monsters (walking, but not flying or swimming). Otherwise, building a wall would be useless. So dragon is out of the question. Additionally, dragons are gods in Chinese mythology and have always been worshipped. So it definitely cannot be dragons.

There are many land-based monsters in Chinese mythology. Mainly, dragon's 9 sons all look terrifying. Most of them are land bound. Some of them eat human like popping chips. So it could be one / some of dragon's 9 sons.

Who knows...

Another possibility would be "Xi" or "Nian". The monster that comes out to eat people on the eve of the Chinese New Year. The Chinese traditional name for the new year eve is "Chu Xi", meaning to eliminate the monster Xi.

It's Gukchilla (my little niece pronunciation of Godzilla) in it's earlier form before evolution.:D:p

An interesting movie never the less, I would love to see the detail construction of the wall and the many weapons and technology invented during that time.
