Hey everyone, i know i don't normally post threads here, but i wanted to ask something of the military veterans on this forum.

I've recently started a masters program in Asian studies and may pursue a second masters in political economy once that's done, but after that I have thought about potential career paths to follow and think one potential path would be to take up military training and join the UN peacekeepers to gain valuable experience and qualifications, if only for a couple years.

Can anyone tell me about this path if it is a good idea?

If that's what you want to do..go for it.

I don't know what country you live in but here in the US joining the military is an 8 year commitment..Typically EIGHT YEARS.. 4 years active duty and 4 years as a reservist. The US does not partake in UN peace keeping missions.

Since I do not know what country you live in I'm not sure if a military would let you join on the promise of going on a UN peacekeeping mission. Generally militaries will take your desires into considerations but will place you where you are most needed.

i don't know if applying to be a peacekeeper is something you choose or the government assigns units to. regardless, you're doing the right thing, and i fully support it. good luck!!

Some countries offer their soldiers to the UN for peace keeping duties. Fiji comes to mind in that sense. But its not just the army that sends peacekeepers. I know for a fact that Australia has sent Police to New Guinea to act as peace Keepers.
