Re: Military FAQ

Well, if PAR mean Phased-Array Radar...

  • 30N6/30N6E Flap Lid B I/J band target tracking and guidance phased-array radar (range 200 km). The Flap Lid B' can guide up to two missiles per target to up to six targets simultaneously.Used on Navy 51C for the guidance of the SA-N-6 (said on sinodefence), use also for the S-300PMU and S-300PMU1 bought by the PLA. This system (S-300) is also using the 30N6E1 or 30N6E2 Tomb Stone I/J band target tracking radar (range 300 km)
  • HT-233 phased array radar, the FT-2000 or HQ-15 SAM system use a HT-233 active phased array radar, RANGE: 120km detection, 90km tracking, track up to 100 targets, simultaneously attack up to 3 targets with 6 missiles
  • SJ-212 phased array radar, with a search range of 115 km, a tracing range of 80 km and guiding range of 50 km of the KS-1 SAM system

The 52C also have a PAR but it's origin and performance are still unknown.

Re: Military FAQ

I'm still waiting on the mods' responses to PanAsian's question (maybe overlooked?):

Who do you find to be some of the most reliable and/or most comprehensive commercial source of defence information out there? And not limited to English sources, though I wouldn't be able to read them even if you told me.

not overlooked, but for all on now onwards expect little delay for the anwsers exspecially when there are several made before even one can be answered....

Thats actually quite hard question, you see most of the sites usually lacks one of them, either the reliableness or the comprehensiveness. But if you have to pick one i would go for Globalsecurity.org. This site has it limitations but it has the most comprehensive and all-cathering information. But if you wan't to look more deeper, like i usually do then you have to rely on more "specialist" site wihich usually narrows theyr information certain area or like for example to certain country. i cannot help you more unless you want to give me more additional information of your interest and i think we could find you a nice site;)

Re: Military FAQ

I have some questions about the PLA.

How much is the pay in the PLA?
Can a PLA soildier,sailor or airman re-enlist?
How do they get promoted?
Will the PLA ever do away with conscripts?
What % of the PLA are carreer men & women?

Thanks for any answers!

I was just wondering which general site you guys would recommend, any opinions of Stratfor? Even though they are not really military-oriented and require a subscription $$$.

I would appreciate some recommended sources to learn more about these militaries:
Japan
India
Israel
Brazil
South Africa (pre/post-apartheid)
ex-Yugoslavia/current Yugoslavia

Hopefully the mods will excuse me for barging in....

I can recommend Tanknet for almost anything military related not just tanks. This forum is heavily populated by military types both current and ex. Although most are USians there are plenty from other countries aswell. Members certainly include knowledgable people from all the countries you mention. Registration is required.

a good site for India related stuff is
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

but I guess that one is familiar already

Re: Military FAQ

nice to get new members on the ansewring team;)

I agree whit knarfo to some point...internet forums can be the best sources of information, mostly when dealing whit low attention matters...but as unfortunetly i have be noticing, they can be also the worst possiple ways of information. Just have to remember that all posted in internet forums can be bullshit, tough fortunetly it isent' the case most of the time.

But back to your country-list, Bharat-rakshak is as knarfo already told a great site about Indian military. Yugoslavia have been one of my faforite country for long time now. The proplem whit yugos are that there is no all-covering site like Bharat-rakshak or sinodefence.com...but there are many adequate sites. Good site to start would be Vojska.net and from there just follow the links...and the links of links...and links of links....links...and even more links...and you eventually get where i have been fiding out ALMOUST everything that there is to know, including the holy grail...Novi Avion...

But to those other countryes, i will have to come back to them later...
