Major terrorist attack in Oslo, Norway

Hello,
For those of you who haven't caught the news yet, there's been a huge terror attack against Norway today. A huge car bomb went off outside the main government offices, causing severe structural damage to the building itself and surrounding department offices. At least 7 are confirmed dead, with many more expected. They have yet to completely search the building. The surrounding streets are littered with debry and broken glass.

The prime minister and the goverment (plus the royal family) escaped unscathed and are kept at undisclosed locations.

In addition, the youth camp for the ruling Labor Party suffered a gunman attack from a man of Nordic appearance (Norwegian????), dressed as a police officer who said he was doing searches related to the attack in downtown Oslo. He then drew a gun and shot at least six. Full panick on the camp. People jumped into the water and swam towards the mainland (it was held on a small island). The military bomb squad has arrived amidst rumors of further bombs on the island.

A complete military/police lockdown of downtown Oslo is in effect. Most of the area has been evacuated, including some residents who are now staying with friends outside of town. Major news corporation headquarters are also severly damaged. Some are now broadcasting from other cities, while some are maintaining small staff in hotels in the area.

Shock.

Normally I really just don't care about any level of awful violence and destruction in the news, I even take perverse humor in it. But when I heard about kids jumping into the water to swim for their lives while being shot, well, I didn't like that very much. That is the act of the lowest level of human. Beyond terrorist. Just...scum. The only other thing that I can remember of the top of my head which has made me think and feel the same way was the Beslan Massacre in 2006.

Maggern, if I remember correctly you're from Norway. Norway seems like such a peaceful, tranquil place normally, perhaps that's part of the reason

Reports of what have happened are still fairly preliminary. But from what I've read, I think we can say the Norwegian security services have done a fairly good job. They got onto Utoya Island and managed to detain the gunman, alive, fairly quickly. At least it seems that way. I don't know the timeline of the events exactly.

As for who did this, I'm not going to comment just yet, as there's no solid information on that. There seem to be a lot of rumors that this was the work of a "lone nut", but if that is true, he was a very effective lone nut.

A 30 something Norwegian right winged extremist claimed that he was behind the bombing. Just read it on another forum.

People who could read Norwegian should be able to confirm this:

three minutes ago, i flicked to this thread and went to take a shit. while i was doing so, i thought about this story, and mcveigh came into my mind. they branded him a terrorist that time, but now im inquire, how does one truly define terrorism? will a simple bombing be sufficient to call it terrorism? or there are other criteria that must be at work and fulfilled before it can be truly considered as one?

This already horrifying tragedy seems to have taken a terrible new twist with this latest revelation.

It is quite staggering how the death toll could have jumped so massively from initial reports, I can only hope that this latest figure is in error.

Does Norway have the death penalty? Rarely would it be so richly deserved.

Saw this on international news. Condolences to the families who lost loved ones.
I forgot which group was said in the news to have "claimed responsibility" but they wanted withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.
