This thread is for Large, static or operating/radio controlled, military models of various types.

Not the smaller scale models I typically nuild in 1/30 scale for ships, or 1/72 scale for aircraft.

I will start the thread with a couple of examples:

First, this video and comment first posted by newbird on the Type 052C/D thread:

I know some like making models of combat ships. The guys in the attached video made truly awesome tank models, including Tigers and other WWII German Tanks. They pay so much attention to details. Hope one day they will also make models of 052D and J-20.

Then, there is this video about a very large (31 feet long) HMS Invincible, operating aircraft carrier. I have contacted the man who built it in Scotland. it is currently stored in his barn and he is hoping to donate it to a Museum:

And finally, this static 1/72 scale model of the USS Enterprise, CVN-65. All scratch built. Tjis model is mostly metal and weighs over a ton, and fills up the mans living room/

These guys in the tank video, the man in Scotland, and this guy with the aircraft carrier all have a great passion and they have acted on it and produced very neat results. I respect all of them greatly for this.

If you know of other such projects, please post them here...or discuss what these people have done.

Re: PLAN Type 052C/052D Class Destroyers

The tiger tank was all-metal 1/6 scale and listed price is 59000, possibly RMB so it would almost cost 10k USD.
For hardcore model hobbyists I think.

The Panzerspaeh II is 19,000, which is probably closer to $3,300

The Opel Truck (which is not powered) is 9,500, or about $1,700.

Yes...definitely, for rich, hardcore hobbyists no doubt.

That's pretty cool. I wonder if they can put a real gas engine in it and maybe have it fire a real bullet... or at least a blank with non-smokeless powder.

Well... I am sure they could do so.

But....

First, using a gas engine would add to the cost and necessitate adding a fuel tank which would probably involve all types of new safety and other regulations to be met. More cost.

Second, firing a projectile would take the model into an entirely new area of regulation. It now could be considered a weapon. Added cost, less sales, and, the projectile would be so small as to render any military or self-defense or other worth very minimal.

So...yes, they could do those things. But the additional design and material cost, and particularly the regulatory cost would be completely prohibitive IMHO.

There is actually a sport of sort for just that:

If we can put low-power lasers/light sensors on those $10,000 dollar jet fighter models, mock drone "dogfights" will be possible for those who can afford it.

I think they already do that with quadcopters and I think you may even be able hack it to do it in first person view with google glass/oculus rift.

Yes...but those are non-lethal, non-harmful to human battles between ships that are easily damaged and sunk...and then repaired and brought right back.

These all metal, heavy tanks, would require some pretty serious firepower to engage one another and damage or destroy each other. A LOT more powerful!

And that would be powerful enough to be dangerous to humans IMHO.

There was that show on Comedy Central called Battlebots. Great show. I don't know why they cancelled it.

Those had to cost probably just as much or more and they were destroyed. No projectiles allowed but a very entertaining show.

In that case I think it might be better to use paint ball munition or "laser tag". You can program the tank to emit smoke if the laser sensor detects a hit. In that case you won't even have to repair the tank after battle.
