More on the article.

He explains something here, which is interesting for people to learn.

On a mechanically controlled plane like the J-7, you cannot pull the stick all the way through. At transonic speeds, on a delta winged aircraft, the delta can only use a small angle of attack. Once you pull past that limit, you will lose speed, and with it, lift, and the nose of the aircraft goes down.

On a fly by wire plane, you cannot have this problem because the FBW computer processes the inputs and carefully controls the angle of attack.

He then comments on the other jians.

J-5 --- Simple in build construction. An honor to fly.

J-6 --- First supersonic plane. Very difficult to fly.

J-7 --- He complains about the high take off and landing speeds. In theory the landing speed should be 280kph, but because of airframe aging and pilot ability, in practice it is often over 300kph.

J-8 --- Does a lot better in take off and landings compared to the J-7, but still has some stability problems in flight. Tail efficiency is good so it can hold a good angle of atack, and the plane's wings have much lift (low wing loading) so the plane take off and land at slower speeds and higher angles. Maneuverbility is not good, and in the latest versions, modifications are done on the plane to improve low speed maneuverbility.

A quick question...do the new advanced LCD's on the Fc-1 display information in Chinese? If that is the case, wouldnt modifications allowing them to display information in Pakistani be needed?

i'm pretty sure the MFDs can display information in English. No need to worry about that. After all, China did develop this for the export market.

Re: JF-17: New Pics

Would be really interesting to see some comparison with MIG-29s. I know that they are not really in the same league but my feeling is that it could be a formidable opponent in a future battlefield (not to speak about the APAC fighter plane market) considering its avionics and relatively advanced air frame.

Of course you might just comment that I should rather compare the MIG-29s (9.15 or above) with J-10...

Tphuang, Crobato,
Thank you so very much guys.

One question however, how credible and close to reality you guys think this interview is?
Also, the shortcoming in vertical plane, how profoundly it can affect the survivability of Jf-17 against another fighter (F-16/ Sukhoi/Mig-29) in combat?

I consider parts of the interview to make sense, though some parts seem to be boasting.

To be frank with you, control of the vertical plane can be decisive in air combat. German Me-109s and FW-190s, which have larger turning circles against the Spitfire and Hurricanes, often use these tactics successfully against their more maneuverable enemies. Likewise these tactics comes in handy against the very maneuverable Russian planes. The P-47 Thunderbolt, which had a larger turning circle to the Me-109, likewise used turned the tables around the smaller fighter using the same. American fighters like the Hellcat, Lightning, Corsairs, all less maneuverable than the Zero, also use vertical tactics to such devastating effect.

The classic textbook example of vertical tactics is the dogfight between the F-4 piloted by Cunningham and Driscoll against an expertly flew MiG-17.

Use of vertical plane tactics can equalize or negate opponent advantages in the horizontal plane. It does not guarantee victory however, but it makes things much more interesting.

That Mig-17 was piloted by Colonel Tomb, vietnam's top ace. multiple times, Tomb managed to turn a vertical fight into a more advantageous horizontal one. If his Mig had any missles, he would have won.

it gub sight on the mig cant cope with hard turning targets this combined with the slow rate of fire from it cannon doomed his mig
