JF-17/FC-1 Fighter Aircraft thread

Re: JF-17/FC-1 Fighter Aircraft thread

DOn't worry my friend...

Chinese procurement policy is always two pronged ever since 90s.
at least two sources for each critical item.

in this case RD-93 to ensure JF-17's schedule.
and WS-13B to ensure RD-93 don't get critically single sourced.

next time this year PAF prob will start to induct WS-13B powered JF-17s.

You're absolutely right. The WS-13 project is pretty critical, in moving away from Russian influence over the JF-17 project and it's sales(especially in markets JFT competes with Russian aircraft).

Don't you mean WS-13? Where did the B-version come from?

The baseline WS-13 was tested a few years ago(2008 if I'm not mistaken), news from China seems to indicate that work is ongoing on a newer WS-13A version. Like J-10>J-10A>J-10B, and SD-10>SD-10A.

They could easily have made modifications based on lessons learnt from the WS10A development.

Why would you want to insist on doing something one way when you know how to do it better?

The Chinese are not satisfied with mere copies of Russian engines, they have put a lot of effort into setting the reliability and service life of the WS10A to be better than the AL31FN, and they have even managed to extend the life of the AL31 itself.

The WS13 might have started off as a copy of the RD93 (for which there is actually no proof besides the usual, and usually unreliable Russian sources who always insist everything China makes is a copy of something of theirs), but why should the Chinese make the WS13 as an exact copy of the RD93 when they can make it better instead?

The Russians seem happy to supply RD93s as required, so there is no pressure to make a 'good enough' engine that can enter service a few years sooner when they can make a much better engine instead.

The RD33 is doing a fine job for the basic JF17. But he time the souped up version is ready (which may take another year or two) then the WS13 or RD93 with more thrust is an option for all customers. China is developing steady so there is no need to think that they cannot deliver it on time. If you see what the improvements from J10A to J10B are and what J20 will represent...

Besides, I was always under the impression that the WS-13 was an improved copy of the RD-93, in other words, I don't see the necessity of having a WS-13A and WS-13B designation just yet.

It is a long road from when an engine type first spooled up to an engine type first get installed to a fighter. Plenty of improvements could be made by then which could warrant B designation.

Take a year of two? Have you looked at how long J-10 has been around for and is still using the same engine it did when it first started? Don't put too much hope on Chinese or Russian engine developers.
