An unmanned Iranian drone allegedly on a spying mission was shot down by a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) JF-17 Thunder fighter jet in Balochistan's Panjgur area, official sources confirmed to DawnNews on Tuesday.

The officials said the unmanned aircraft was shot down by a JF-17 in the Parom area of Panjgur district after it ventured "deep inside Pakistani airspace" on a spying mission.

They spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to media.

Security forces took custody of the debris after discovering the wreckage on Monday, but it is still unclear when the drone was shot down. Security was tightened in the area following the incident. The PAF has declined to comment on the matter.

This is the second Iranian drone to have been reported shot down in 24 hours after

Iran's army chief recently warned that

─ remarks that drew a strong protest from Islamabad ─ after 10 Iranian border guards were killed by militants allegedly from across the border earlier this year.

"They spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to media." I've been seeing this sentence for years. Is it legal to speak to media in anonymity when someone is not authorized to speak?

Iranian drone was 45 km inside Pakistan's territory. This is unprecedented. If Iran wants to open up another front, then they have many nasty surprises in store for them, including JF-17.

This incident points to deployment of JF-17 in Balochistan, something that has not been reported. However this can not be treated as a confirmation since conceivably the aircraft in question could have been flown from Karachi. Even though a Rotax engine powered propeller drone can not be fast, but to meet any such and other threats from Iran, it is important to base at least a flight of JF-17 aircraft in Balochistan.

I believe shooting drone is like shooting sitting ducks. Wonder what weapon was used in the shooting, Onboard gun or missile? Perhaps there's other cheaper solution to deal with this thread; for example, AAA or simply HMG.

Nope. But hard to find them and punish them for it, especially when most of it time it's done by the government itself to say things it can't get away with officially.

& for sometime to down play the event or the incident like this one .... which occurred 2 days back but government was hesitant to release the news officially because of the multidimensional sensitivities involve with this issue ....

not a VERY GOOD DEVELOPMENT for regional stability.

Armed Non Governmental Organizations sponsored by Saudi Arabia and CIA have been operating from Pakistan into SE Iran for a long time. That is an existing front. It should be ended but Pakistani governments have been unable to suppress them.

Sir, it is a two-way traffic. In early to mid-90s there was a lot of sectarian violence with equal support provided by Iran. Low-key sectarian violence is still taking place, and Iranian-supported groups are on the losing end, generally.

Iranians have been recruiting volunteers from Parachinar (adjoining Afghanistan) to fight in Syria. However, I will concede that in the past years monetary support from GCC has emboldened some groups to support violence inside Iran. But then it is not purely a matter of terrorism as such, since Iranian Mullahs suppress Sunnis who predominate in certain areas such as Sistan (Baloch areas under Iranian control). Balochistan is sparsely populated and poorly governed and Pakistan find it difficult to secure the border and cut cross-border movement.

There are other issues such as Iranian tacit support for Indian-sponsored subversion inside Pakistan, Crime bosses from Karachi traveling on Iranian passports, generally hostile Iranian policies on International fora, etc...

In this context, one can place the latest incident of JF-17 being used to kill the Iranian drone deep inside Pakistan's air-space. If Iranians had wanted a partner in peace, there would have been a positive engagement from Pakistan, since Pakistanis generally view Iran favorably. From the Iranian side, though it seems to be a different story.
