06 is a testing bird, it is bound to have some differences than serial birds. Nose mounted pitot tubes being one of them, as that is the best spot to place one for testing purposes.

The production of JF17 / FC-1 starts in Pakistan. I am surprised that this has not been reported here by the more active posters.

Deino:

That VHF/UHF com antenna is now standard for more PAF planes. It is also gradually being used on F7P and PG... It is imported from a western firm.

The J-10 is a relatively high performance fighter, has a different flight envelope than JF-17 and much larger payload. If the JF-17 costs $15-20m, then I would expect the J-10 to be over $30m. Even with upgrades and modifications, the JF-17 is in a different class from J-10. Its like saying F-16E version has performance similar to F-15. That's not true. Even F-15A still flies higher, faster, and carries more bombs than F-16E. Does that mean F-16E is not worth developing? No.

I think the F-16 E/F question is still pending. UAE paid $3 billion for the co-development R&D expense, and is supposed to receive royalty from any units sold to 3rd party. But Western countries are likely to go directly to F-35, and used F-16's sold to poor-er countries on a budget can select competitively priced upgrades from Israel. UAE doesn't really have much of a domestic aviation industry, and I don't think they got to assemble the F-16's either. The aircraft does serve their defensive needs.

The JF-17 is less capable than the J-10 or F-16 E/F. But it provided a big boost to Pakistan's military aviation industry. Tech transfer, funding, skilled labor, years of manufacturing/assembly to fulfill the order, and even more years in the future to provide service, overhaul, and possibly exports. It's a good investment in developing and maintaining local skilled labor. Plus, no need to worry about international sanctions -- you make the parts yourself.
