Shinzo Abe will push for Japan's candidacy as permanent member of UN Security Council when he speaks at the UN this week. It's not clear what strategy he'll use to convince China not to veto Japan's membership. As things stand in the Ukraine affair, it's possible Russia might vote against Japan too. Abe might be better off waiting a few more years before tilting windmills.

Japan PM to push for permanent seat at UN Security Council

China said recently that it is not against more developing countries joining the SC. ie, India, Brazil and South Africa.

As long as China has veto, Japan will never be a permanent member of the UNSC.

    But not Japan. ;)

Besides, I'm sure none of the Big Five would be willing to share their veto powers with more nations.

China and Russia will never allow Japan to join. Both countries will veto because of historical and current geographical interests.

I hate to say it, but Japan has more rights to a permanent seat on the UN Security Council than either UK or France. In a just world, Japan would already be on it. You could say the same for Germany and India. Maybe they should consolidate UK and French seats into one, and add Germany and India as new members. The UN could negotiate Japan's status after that.

I would like to see you try to get France and UK share a SC seat. I'd think that would really end in UK leaving EU.
The solution from far away would seem to be a single EU seat but for that you need a common European foreign policy which it is impossible to achieve unless the US stop meddling and then take another thirty or so years.

Some people like their fantasies. Nevermind the reality that UNSC Permanent Seats were created for the victors of WW2.

The EU would be lucky to still be around in 30 years, nevermind sharing a single seat on the UNSC.
