    Hi,

Currently there are preciously little info on Japanese Military on the net. I am wondering if any of you can show me some enlightenment on the current Japs military power - their navy, airforce and army. Also do they have a missile force?

I am also very interested in the capability of their military... the training they received and the hardwares they have.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. It's polite to not use the term "Japs". I don't think you'd be very happy if someone was asking info on the "Chinks". ;)

    2. Globalsecurity does have a fair description of the JSDF's assets in English. As to other English-language sites, I'm not sure what else there is that fills in the gaps GS misses. Of course if you could read Japanese, I'm sure there'd be plenty of alternative sources.

    3. If you mean offensive, ballistic missiles when you say "missile force" then no they don't have one. Of course they have SAMs though.

Well asking that in chinese military forum, migth not be the best place to start, as we have kids whit hot passion towards japanese warcrimes in WWII and in these minds, those old events regnerate into modern times in weird fantasyes of some oncoming sino-japanese cold war. So i will expect no countrybashing, not even detoriating and bashing comments or post or anyhting else related to Japanese-china penis contest.
So if you (the possiple future answerer) havent got anything else to say about japanese military, I would suggest you to keep your feelings inside or some trashcan forums that seems to have surfaced on the internet lately...

Well, the Japanese military is one of the most technologically advanced militaries in the world. The JMSDF, Japan's navy, was the first to receive the AEGIS from the U.S., which is on Japan's Kongo class vessel. The Japanese are also part of the JSF project. The T-90 is like the Japanese Abrams and actually uses the same gun mounted on Abrams and Leopard 2. They are capable of producing their own military hardware and software.

Globalsecurity.org or Wikipedia would be some of the most accessible resources that I know of.

It's true that they have the capability to indigeniously produce stuff but more often than not the costs outweigh the benefits of simply buying from foreign countries, an example being the F-2 program.

JSDF does not possess a ballistic missile force but Japan nevertheless has certain impressive technological capabilities.

Besides Russia (with the START series, a modified Topol ICBM), Israel (Shavit, a modfied Jericho-2 MRBM) and China (Kaituozhe (KT-1/2/3) based on first stage of DF-31 ICBM) Japan is the only country currently using completely solid powered satellite launchers. The japanese Mu-5 is able to put a throwweight of 1.9 ts into low earth orbit and in 1995 they conducted even a reentry test with a german Express vehicle and an earlier Mu-3S2 version. Accordingly Japan has definetly the capability to modify a Mu series launcher with a new purpose built third stage and a reentry vehicle for a special payload and instantly they will have created a viable ICBM.

Of course no responsible japanese prime minister will ever give such an irresponsible order but with some inevitable pretext resulting from Kim Jong-Il´s nuclear activities Abe Shinzo will do something in 07/08. Unfourtunately that something will change east asia´s balance of power for generations to come and probably most people in Washington will silently smile at first that their ´second UK´ in the far east has eventually achieved nuclear capability. Only time will tell whether who smiles first will simply be the last to cry.

I have read somewhere (still looking for that damn link) that Japanese Type-90 MBT is the most expensive in the world, is that true? And what is the capability of that particular MBT.

I reckon that Japanese have submarines... how many? And what type?

Well I don’t know how much type90 costs but I have some specsifications:

    Crew: 3
    Length: 9.8 m
    Width: 3.4 m
    Height: 2.3 m
    Weight: 50 tonnes
Main armament: license-built Rheinmetall L44 120 mm smoothbore guns
    Secondary armament:
    -12.7mm machine gun
    -7.62mm machine gun

Mobility Power plant: Mitsubishi 10ZG 10 cylinder, Diesel
    1,500 hp (1,120 kW)
    Suspension: hydropneumatic
    Road speed: 70 km/h
    Power/weight: 30 hp/tonne
    Range: 350 km

As for subs JMSDF uses 17 subs in three different classes:

    - Oyashio class submarines (9 in service)
    - Harushio class submarines (6 in service)
    - Yushio class submarines (2 in service)

    Hi, Rhino...
I will reply to you in this thread tomorrow.
At first, i will give some comments about the previous replies of other members in this thread.
Then, because it's very a large topic to speak about one army, can you give me a concrete and specific question as a starting point?

I'm an expert of ground force, but still I have the suficient basic professional knowledge to speak to you about navy and air force (even if I would know less in detail than for the ground force).
