I suppose because Akizuki has only one organic helicopter (SH-60) , and larger hangar could be for them (with included maintenance facilities) , with smaller serving for "visiting" helicopters or storage .

Wondering what is the main benefit of having 2 AESA arrays side by side (small and big one) than just single big one like Burkes or 052C/D ?

You may surprise, actually even Murasame class can carry two SH-60:

I am not entirely sure what the yellow arrow is pointing to. It may well be an SH-60J(K) Seahawk...but all you see is the rotor sticking out there.

I can tell you this, the nine Murasame, the five Takaname, and the four Akizuki destroyers are all designed to carry a single SH-60J(K) Seahawk helicopter. That is what their facilities are meant to accommodate and support. (The first two have exactly the same hull and hanger design. The third is a slightly larger version - 2 3/4 feet shorter and 3 feet wider).

Now, in rare circumstances or emergencies can two land on her? Well of course.

And in such circumstances, in an emergency could they pull both into the hanger.? Yes, I suppose they could, and perhaps that is what we are seeing here.

But that is not what they were designed to do or to accommodate for their operations.

Agree :) in general all Japanese DDG which get a hangar except large Hyuga, Izumo, carry usualy 1 helo, now maybe sometimes two could get into it but a hangar big enough for 2 helos operationnal there is something else...

According Flottes de Combat Atago class can carry two all others i have mentionned one.

now I'll put up a theory to answer my original question :)

sorry if it's a FAQ :) but why the hangar doors of Akizuki-class Destroyers are asymmetric?

I've read again, and carefully, the article in a Czech military journal about the Akizuki-class, and I've realized these ships can operate "Japanese Merlin"

and it seems to me (by just checking wiki) it's much bigger than a Seahawk ... so I think the doors are not symmetric to be able to drag an MCH-101 through one of them :) right or wrong?
