Yes, a fishing boat struck on the port quarter and capsized afterwards. Two men out of four from the boat died. So far it's hard to say what happened there as the testimonies to the medias of both survivors are contradictory. Most likely it was fault from the fishing boat captain who died in the accident. GPS informations from both ships will tell the truth for sure.
Wow! That is something.

Was it a Japanese fishing boat?
Yes it was.

It's been also decided that Oosumi class vessels will be modernized starting from the next fiscal year. With introduction of Ospreys and AAV-7's to SDF the improvements will include:

- enlargement of the forward elevator which has been designed for vehicles not helicopters etc
- heat resisting coating on the flight operation deck
- improvements on the aft ramp like anti skid painting and maybe some mechanisms to support returning amphibious vehicels

Hangar on those vessels is huuuge but will need some improvements for aicraft storage as well I presume.

This is great news!

Three more large flattops that can carry the Osprey. Clearly, the JMSDF is going to be buying a few.

Some very good but dated photos of the JMSDFS Osumi LST-4001. They were posted on a Chinese site in conjunction with the ships recent collision. The captions only tell about the collision and are in Chinese. No need to post.

Very nice pics popeye!

Very decent hanger and well decks on those babies.

These were the first JMSDF carrier-like vessels. I remember when they built the three of them thatd everyone was talking then about how they were obviously "carriers" just like they talked about the Hyuga and now the Izumo.

LOL! What's old is new!

Thanks Jeff.. As I finally see some very good photos of these ship I feel the JMSDF has fudged on the displacement just a bit.. I bet this class of ship is closer to 13,000 tons displacement. 8,900 tons displacement?? No way. Just my opinion.

Maybe 8,900 tons empty...but I also believe they are at or over 12,000 tons full load. See my:

Restoration plan to replenish Japan's F-2 fleet after tsunami that hit the nation in March 2011.

18 touchdowns, seems 6 will be repaired and 12 will be scrapped.

The 18 was based at Matsushima with the 21 Squ, F-2 OCU. After 2011/03 was transferred to Misawa.

Exist also 3 frontline units mainly mission attack of ships.

94 F-2 build 62 A and 32 B. F-2 is the first fighter in the world with F-22 use one AESA radar.

12 lost, one significant number !

This losses bored for JASDF because it is her the most modern aircraft, the F-15 is only one fighter, good but only about half of modernized and F-4 old.

The F-35A ordered come will operate at the earliest in 2018 and with only 42 ordered for replaced the 2 squ of F-4, with some aircrafts for test, training this is just for equiped 2 frontline units.

If anyone know the number of fighter by squ, i found 20/25 ?

Some additional details about Mid Term Defense Plan regarding MSDF surfaced in the new number of Ships Of The World magazine few days ago. So Japan construction plans are:

- Aegis equipped destroyer (let's call that 'modified Atago class' for now) - 2
- 5000t escort vessel (that's 25DD class) - 1
- 3000t escort vessel (new project, I'll mention that later) - 1
- Soryu class submarine or new variant with lithium batteries supporrted API - 5
- 690t minesweeper - 3 vessels
- submarine rescue ship - 1
- sound measurement ship (or Oceanic Surveillance Ship going by US nomenclature), the modified Hibiki class - 1

So lets go to the conclusions. From those numbers it seems like 25DD class will end up with only 2 vessels for now. 3000t new class of escort looks like the Japanese variant of LCS ready for mass production which means that news popping up in the end of the last year were true. 690t class minsweeper will be the MSO25 class (MSO stands for 'Mine Sweeper Ocean' in MSDF) vessels number 2-4. 25MSO will be replacing the older Yaeyama class minesweepers.

JSDF currently has a very powerful "navy". Will the US allow them to "normailize" into a full fledged navy with its own chain of command?
