The carrier-borne aircraft would be procured to be deployed from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force(JMSDF) two Izumo-class helicopter destroyers, JS Izumo and JS Kaga. The two vessels, the largest in the JMSDF fleet with a displacement of 27,000 tons (full load) and a length of 248 meters would be modified in order to accommodate the aircraft.

The first ship in the class, Izumo was launched on 6 August 2013. The ship was commissioned on 25 March 2015. Kaga was commissioned on 22 March 2017. The F35B is a derivative of the F35A already operated by the Japan Air Self Defense Force.

According to the NNN report, the Japanese government decision to introduce the F-35B is related to China strengthening its expansion into the ocean. Japan aims to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Southwestern islands including the Senkaku Islands.

The Japanese government will incorporate its decision in the Defense Outline that will be announced next month after showing these policies to both Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komei parties.

In February 2018, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported that Japan was planning to acquire 40 vertical takeoff and landing F-35Bs, which could be operated from these ships with some alterations. In March this year, the ruling LDP called upon the Japanese government to develop its own aircraft carriers and operate F-35B aircraft, which has been thought to include refitting the Izumo class.

So it sounds like the Japanese have pulled the trigger on 100 additional F35 units on top of there existing 42 unit order. This new order will likely be primarily F35A models however in addition to these a unspecified number of B models that is the S/VTOL version will be procured.
Previously reported stories claimed the JSDF were thinking up to as many as 40 B units. The Japanese were looking to buy 100 A units to replace early model F15 no longer able to be updated.
Izumo class should be able to accommodate 12 B units.

Would this conflict with F-3? They are basically replacing the F-15s on an one-by-one basis.

So you found the real deal.
Basically the Izumo news is just smoke and mirror with the 100 F-35s are the actual meat.
Do you remember Trump threatening Japan of placing a Tariff on Japanese import but at the last moment Trump back down.
Well this is the reason why.
Trump&Co. knew that the F-3 joint development project will not benefit them personally since it's still too far in the future with no promise he can win the next election in 2022 so he demanded something more tangible while he is still in office.
I think in return the US gave some information about Nissan in return so they can spite the French since the sequences in the chain of events for the Nissan incident really does not add up unless Nissan was given information about a planned merger between Renault and Nissan orchestrated by French government half a year ago.
We knew Trump had an ax to grind with Europe and what would be more satisfying then to kill the goose that laid the golden egg for France where Nissan generated half of the profit Renault reported.

When this hits the commercial market it will kill C929 project before it leaves the hanger. With Boeing utilizing this technology along with CMC engines it will dramatically up heave energy efficiency which is the most critical in long haul passenger airliner business.

For the record the next presidential election is 2020 not 2022.

I wouldn't classify a B model but as smoke and mirrors. It is a major shift. For the first time since the end of the second world war Japan will not only have flatops but fixed wing carrying flattops.
That's a big shift for the SDF. Who have in the last few years also been adding a Marine corps again a first since the defeat of the second world war. These are the response from Japan to shifts in the security situation in the neighborhood.

. Farther more I think that recent events did push the SDF choice on time but not deals with Nissan. Rather I think it was the first actual deployment by the USMC on LHAs followed by the British demo flights on the Queen Elizabeth class carrier. And finally the actual combat debut. This really I think pushed the F35B from simply a unproven temperamental derivative of the F35A to a actual platform standing on its own.

Don't get me wrong the A model buys are a BIG deal. F3 is going to take time for the Japanese to transition from where it is now in the concept stage to actually on a tarmac. Earliest is bottom half of the 2020s. Mean time the Oldest F15 birds of the SDF are not getting any younger. The problematic out come of the F2 program which resulted in what 88 usable airframes after 6 losses. Getting those 100 A models ( assuming 40 B models + 60 A models in new order with 42 current order.) That's a big formation.

Those 100 A model already made SDF on top of ALL ASEAN countries airforce combined. The next question will be how S.Korea join the game and add the bid.

South Korea already had a order for 40 F35A models with talk of also getting Bs but with the recent shifts with the North South and Moon Administration, any but wouldnyave to be run from Seoul to Pyongyang. Just be be sure Kim doesn't demand his puppies back.
