Tamiya has a 1/700 Model of a DDH-192 Japanese carrier out now, based on F-35Bs.

It is the type of design they were talking about in Japanese research and design circles a 2-3 years ago:

Hasegawa has a 1/700 Kaga DDH-184, showing her (one of the existing Izumo class) with F-35s too:

I think ultimately the JMSDF is going to either equip Izumo class carriers with F-35Bs, or build something like that DDH-192, with a skil jump ... maybe both.

Time will tell.

Alright! Here's the first of the Advanced Atago AEGIS DDGs. She'll be ready to launch very soo.

When both are completed the Japanese will have eight full AEGIS DDGs, and six of their own AEGIS-like vessels in the Akizuki and the two follow on Ashai vessels.

This vessel will ultimately get the latest AEGIS gear as well as the potential for a Japanese or other allied laser weapon system.

And then there's the Japanese F-35As now flying.

If we could see them buy about 50 F-35Bs for their carriers that would be great!

Way to go Japan!

...
specifically what "laser weapon system" would that be?

Well, the wording on that is not really very proper...they do not have such a system ready yet.

The point is that they may be preparing the new Atago with the type of power output they would need to power one, either of their own or from the US or elsewhere among allies.

Japan's Technical Research and Design Institute with the Japanese Defense Ministry has been working on Laser Weapons Technology for some time, as well as the work being done in Osaka and elsewhere, including a number of private technology and military contractors..

As I said, there is a god deal of thought about the advanced Atago and its power, as to whether it was upgrading its power capabilities to allow for future laser and rail gun type weaponry.

At the same time, Japan's been having some success in the defense industry and prvate industry with laser research. For example in 2015, Japan's Laser for Fast Ignition Experiment (LFEX) test in Osaka had some significant success in 2015 but it was not weapons grade or caliber...but it did provide some significant research and technological advancement..

JApan is also woking with Lockheed, Grumman, Thales, and others on their development.

Time will tell...but Japan is definitely working on these programs...both with US defense contractors, and on its own.

I think we should always try to separate daydreaming from an actual status of weapons programs, plus try to take into account financial aspects;

over the years I've made thousands of unpopular posts pointing to axed/delayed/underperforming projects, over budget/financially untenable;

LOL now

JSDF finished the first stage development last year and had already made budget requisition for the next stage of research targeting a 150kW laser.

Solid state lasers utilizing Ceramics was developed in Japan.

When they first announced it US DoD immediately made request for dozens of samples to verify their claim.

call it bliss or whatever, but I wonder how much the Japanese spend on fielding new weapons

(I don't mean technology demonstrators, they might be marvels, but then somebody would have to invest MONEY)

and how big percentage of the military budget is eaten up by personnel and operational cost;

do you know this breakdown?

Yes...I am very aware of Japan's serious research into laser technology and weappins.

some folks prefer to remain cynical...and that's fine, they have every right to, and numerous companies and administrations have given them reason to.

But that does not mean it is not happening, and in Japan, it IS happening. I just a soon it come as a surprise to a lot of people, especially potential opfors.

Corrections:
The solid laser research is unrelated to the weapon test. Don't mix up things.
The next stage target is 50kw instead of 150kW. And according to your yahoo link, it is suspected to be shooting a UAV within 1km.
The test weapon is based on gas laser.
