Yeah, that's my point. Now all you need to fill them is a truck with missiles, a boom truck and a pier which can accomodate ships as big as a destroyer. Adding VLS cells from the scratch would require much more heavy equipement and it could be only done in a dry dock I assume.

The cells could be filled with 8 ASROCs 4 type 12 vertical launch anti ship missiles and 16 type 03 Chu SAM Kai.
I was looking over the budget yesterday and found mentions of them on the requisition paper.
Are the Type 03 CHu SAMs quad packed? Is that a 16 cell load your are speaking of 8 ASW cells, 4 ASM cells and 4 AAW cells?
If so, then with 16 cells she could have 8 ASW, 8 ASM and 16 AAW cells filled how ever she needs....perhaps 4 AAW with the quad packs, and the other 12 with longer range SAMs?
I don' t undestand what means Samurai the Type 03 replace Hawk in Army it is not a SAM for ships ( AF have the Patriot )
In more Type 03 do 32 cm diameter and ESSM 25 cm and the Mk-41 do 63 x 63 cm so u can't put 4 in a cell.

The type 03 was originally studied by the JMSDF but eventually selected the ESSM but now JMSDF is having second thoughts since ESSM only has semi-active terminal guidance limiting the number of missiles they can launch at one time.
The type 03 is equipped with a fully active terminal seeker so it does not need terminal guidance from the ship making it more useful under saturated attack.
By the way the the variant of the type 03 SAM for the JASDF is the AAM-4 AKA type 99 AAM.
As for width, the maximum canister width for Mk41 is 71 cm so it can fit a quad pack type 03.

Exact big difference between even if cables, connections etc... for VLS get ready installed a VLS and reload missiles, quite sure minimum several days a week it is a worck for shipyards, no maintenance, so less easy and more long.
