Japan broadens horizons

By Robert Karniol JDW Asia-Pacific Bureau Chief
Bangkok

The 'Japan-Australia Joint Declaration on Security Co-operation' was signed in Tokyo on 13 March by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his visiting Australian counterpart, John Howard. It is the first such accord signed by Japan that supplements its long-standing military alliance with the US, which is anchored by a formal mutual defence treaty.

"It is a great step in developing our security relationship with Australia but we don't yet have a detailed plan [on its implementation]," a Japanese source told Jane's. "The first phase will involve high-level exchanges and then staff-level exchanges. The two countries could eventually join in peacekeeping exercises but in my opinion this would probably start in a multilateral framework."

The annual 'Cobra Gold' exercise in Thailand could serve as the first mechanism for bringing Japanese and Australian troops together for peacekeeping training.

Japan's new AEGIS-class destroyer, the Atago, entered service with the MSDF on 15th March. The ship is an improvement over the Kongo-class, though unfortunately I'm not sure exactly what is different. From what I understand two differences are that it will carry two helicopters and use the SSM-1B AShM.

Its based on the FLight II/A Burke class. At full loadout, it displaces 10,000 tons, more the the Tico cruisers.

According to Jane's, there are now just three candidates left in the running for the JASDF's new fighter purchase contract.

Eurofighter Typhoon
F/A-18E/F Super Hornet
F-15E Strike Eagle

Jane's believes that the Typhoon is currently leading the opposition. ;)

Japan is considering the F-22 as well but it is unlikely because of the U.S. Congress does not want to sell the F-22 overseas because they are afraid it might get into the hands of the Enemy, such as China or North Korea.

It's unlikely that would happen, but if the Americans don't want to sell to their best partner in Asia then that's their loss. We can move in and snatch up the deal. :)

EDIT: Schumacher, yes.
