J-20... The New Generation Fighter

Re: New Generation Fighter

And who told you the F-16 are not considered a good (or better) dog-fighter?

The F-16 is a very good dog-fighter, but the F-15 is universally held as being as the top air-to-air combat fighter in the USAF (F-22 aside). Short of the F-22, nothing in the USAF can outclimb a F-15 or match its level speed. The F-15 was designed to be a fairly maneuverable, fast, powerful fighter while the F-16's design philosophy focused more on producing a lightweight, highly-maneuverable aircraft that could be cheaply mass produced. Both were conceived as air-superiority fighters, though the F-15 from the beginning was designed to be a pure air-superiority fighter while the F-16 was designed with secondary ground-attack capability in mind as well.

Re: New Generation Fighter

according to Chinese magazine, J-10 cost around $30 million,a J-10C probably cost a near $40 million.
according to kanwa, one main reason why J-8-3 still in service, is because J-11 is to expensive.

Re: New Generation Fighter

wtf is J-10C????
You mean the theoretical carrier-based J-10 variant? Sounds like a BS magazine to me.
J-8 is cheap, its easy to maintain, it has a solid airframe and powerful engines and room for a big bad radar. In some regards, it fulfills parts of the interceptor role better than the J-11 anyways, and does so at a third the cost. So why not keep them in service?

If I remember correctly, the F-16 was designed to be a PURELY short range air-defense fighter. Excellent maneuverability and low cost. The BVR combat and ground attack capabilities were added later on since the designed proved to have exceptional upgradeability.

F-15 was designed with air superiority and interception in mind. Ground attack was also later added to this.

F-16 has the advantage in a low altitude low, speed fight, but F-15's pilots will keep the fight at high altitude and high speeds where it can dominate.

Furthermore, F-16s, like Flankers are designed for a turning fight whereas the F-15 was designed for a climbing fight. F-15s maintain higher speed, climb quicker, and maintain higher energy states.

according to april issue of kanwa, carrier version known as J-10BH.

Well, the fact is any J-10C in any type of role is theoretical, for the PLA has not released any aircraft or designs with the classification of J-10C. Now, you post:

Can you please tell us what the J-10C is? Because I have not heard of it before except for references to a theoretical carrier based design rumored by fanboy and speculative sources.

I agree with you.

I think I have heard before that PLAAN is interested in acquiring SU-33 for carrier based planes. Any updates? did it materialize?

Re: New Generation Fighter

If there is a single philosophy or adage which colours my view on weapon procurement, it has to be "don't build/buy something that you are not prepared/can't afford to lose" This is a rather stark acknowledgement that weapons are ultimately consumable tools and that a nations ability to win modern major wars is about its abilities; both industrial and financial, to build new weapons faster than they are destroyed and to destroy the enemies weapons faster than they can be replaced.

With this in mind, when I look at the figures being quoted for the costs Super Planes as compared to China's modern production planes, (and I can only take these figures on trust) it seems fair to assume that China can build a squadron of very capable, modern state of the art Aircraft for the cost of a US Superplane. Now I am sure that F22's and F35's are good, but not that good and the balance of morale would have to sit with the PLAAF in any potential conflict

Interesting points, but can you provide evidence to support your view that the F22 especially, can be countered by any other nation.?
We would only be speculating on how fast China could ramp up its production to replace aircraft loses at(for want of something better) the rate it was losing them during the Korean war.and as the Japanese found out, trained personnel as well.
