Oh, that's really smart. Analyzing the noise the engine makes.

I know a person or two who can tell the engine by its noise. Off-course they are very experience with many years of Aero engine maintenance and related things plus they can only Id engines they've actually worked with, but I think engines kinda have their own "sound-print".

I don't doubt it. I imagine the different internal arrangements in each engine generates a unique sound print as air passes through. Still really smart way to ID engines. I think this only adds to the evidence we've collected on the identity of the engine so far.

By "official" you mean "unofficial tour around the planespotting areas for non experienced photographers, which would not be possible unless of purposeful CAC/PLAAF lax security," surely?
