Very cool, although the landing gears seem to have low level of detail. Unfortunately there's no zoomed in shots to confirm this. I have built a F-18 last year, without properly painting it (paints are quite expensive to get), and I'm building a F-14 atm, which will definitely be better painted than the F-18 :p

Well, Trumpeter beat everyone else to a decent J-20 scale model kit. No surprise since they are the leading scale model company in PRC that is trying to establish itself in the world. Nonetheless, I must say this kit looks pretty good/accurate. I guess as the J-20 enters production in the future, Trumpeter will update its kit accordingly.

Tamiya will be their rival

Whoever made those made me almost jizz my pants, but merely 'cause I'm a plane+ modern fighter jet model fanatic!!

If it's made by Tamiya, which is a very renowned brand with quality and detail, then you'll get a better product with more stuff to make. In addition, if your model is a large one, you might get more details for it as well.

I used to have 2 Su-27UB, Mig-29, F-117A, F-15J, Su-37, Su-34, F-18E/F, F-22, F-35, AH-64D, AH-1, B-1 Too bad they're all made when I was a kid, so it wasn't made all that nice.

After nearly 8 years apart, I'm gonna revive my hobby, but this time as adult + much more knowledge on making models and about these aircrafts. Since I have a 1/48 F-15C right now(unopened), I will go collect the following planes in the same ratio: F-16, F-22, Su 37, J-20,J-10, EF-2000, Rafale
I built 1/72 scale aircraft and 1/350 scale ships 20 years ago.

Had the USS New Jersey (the 1980s modernized one), the USS Ticonderoga CG, the USS Spruance DD, a US Brooke class for ships, and then a bunch of aircraft. EA-6B, AV-8B, F-14D, F-15C, F-15E, F-16C, F-117, F-18D, F-22, F-111, B-1B, AC-130H, PC3 orion, E-2C Hawkeye, SH-60, AH-64, AH-1 Cobra, V-22 Osprey, Su-27, Mig-29, SU-24, SU-25, SU-22, Mig-31, Mil-24 Hind-E, K-50 Hoakum. All built and very well detailed. Even bought some aftermarket phot etched things (older back then and not as good as today) for the ships, and 1/72 scale add on weapons and parts for the aircraft.

Now I have started again. I had the USS Enterprise (Tamiya) from back then that I never build, along with a B-52, a B-2, SR-77Penetrator, E-3 Sentry, RC-135, and a KC-135...all still unbuilt.

BTW, Trumpeter, Dragon, Cyber Hobby, and Hobby Boss all now make products as good as, and in some casses better than Tamiya. They have come a long ways in the last few years and many of their models include the photo etch parts with the model which is nice.

So I started anew.

I am 30% or more complete with my 1/350 PLAN Aircraft Carrier just released by Trumpeter in 1/350 scale. Got the first commercial one sent to the US. Have the hull and flight deck together and painted with a scratch built hangar deck because it did not come with one (too bad), but no landing spots, marker lines, landing strip lines, etc. complete/painted yet. Also have the small handrailing on the lower portion of the ship, but have not completed the weapons systems there yet. Will be starting on the island this week, after which I will begin on the aircraft (J15s, KA-31s, KA-27s, Z-8s and Z-9s). I'm pretty jazzed about it and it is looking good.

I am using the Goldmedal Models 1/350 photo etch set for the Kuznetsov to spruce it up with railings, radars, and many additional details. I use Goldmetal and other photo etch part sets, or the ones that come with the models in some cases, for all of the following models I am talking about...they make a huge differnce in the finished product. Usually use Model Master paints as well along with a really nice dremel tool with all of the attachments.

I intend to build Carrier battle groups for the PLAN, US Navy, the Russians and the British.

The PLAN will be the carrier, two Type 054As when Trumpeter releases those this summer (scheduled for June), a Type 052C which I already have, a Type 052B which I already have, the PLAN 139 Ningbo Sov, a Type 093 SSN which I already have. I will add a Type 071 when Trumpeter comes out with that model. That's be a total of eight, modern PLAN vessels for that grouping.

The US Group will be based around the USS Enterprise, CV-65, which I have, the USS Ronald Reagan, CV-76, which I have, the Bunker Hill AEGIS CG which I have, the Lassen AEGIS DDG which I have, the Churchhill AEGIS DDG which I am yet to buy, a LA Class Flight III SSN which I have already completed, the USS Texas Virgina class SSN which I already have, two LCS (which I already have) outfitted for the ASW role, and the USS Iwo Jima, LHD-7 which I already have. I will add to that my existing New Jersey and the other Tico for a total of 12 US vessels in a two carrier grouping.

I am yet to buy any of the Russian models or the UK models, but a lot of them (except the new UK Queen Eleizabeth) are already out there and I will get them as time goes on. For example my UK Group will be the Illustrious, the QE, two Darings, two Firgates and an Astute SSN for a total of seven vessels. I hope to have the Chinese and the US groups finished by this fall.

I'll post threads here on SD and a whoe site on my JEFFHEAD.COM Site as I build these, talking about the builds, techniques, difficiencies in the models, work arounds, scratch builds etc.

For example, on the PLAN Carrier, it did not show or come with the FL-3000N missile system on the starboard bow sponson and the painting scheme does not show the landing strip painted in a darker gray color than the rest of the flight deck. I have asked Trumpeter to send me the parts for the additional FL-3000N missile system and to revise their paint scheme based on these two photos of the actual vessel:

Picture of J-20 model looks strikingly similar to the real plane

[Note: Thank you to HouShanghai for the pictures.]
I have this model, along with the J-10 model by Trumpeter. Have not built them yet, but intend to.

There is no weapon bay on the Trumpeter J-20 model, but I plan to scratch build a main weapons bay into the bottom of the aircraft.

Right now though, I am working on my

Great job to whomever put this together.

I also build 1/72 scale aircraft in addition to my

.

I have this same aircraft in my "stash", along withh other Chinese aircraft I am collecting to build when I take breaks in between building ships.

I have the J-20, the J-11, the J-15 (actually an SU-33 I intend to make-over into a J-15), SU-30, and the J-10. I want to get a J-31 as soon as one comes out, and would love to also get a JH-7...all in 1/72 scale.

For the US I have pretty much all of the aircraft and built them and detailed them up nicely including the F-22 Raptor, the YF-23 Black Widow, the F/A-18C Hornet, the E-2C HAwkeye, the F-15E Strike Eagle, the F-16D Falcon, AH-64 Apache, AH-1 Cobra, AC-130 Spectre, OH-58D Kiowa, AV-8B Harrier II, etc. Lately, I am selling off some of those I have already built to make way for the new aircraft coming online. These include my EA-6B Prowler, S-3B Viking, the P-3C Orion, F-14D Tomcat, OV-10A Bronco, etc. In their place I have already purchased and own the F/A-18F Super Hornet, the EG-18 Growler, the F-35B Lightning II, the new P-8A Poseidon, the X-47B, etc.

I also own and have yet to build 1/72 scale B-52G Stratofortress, B-2 Spirit, B-1B Lancer, an RAH-66 Commanche, CH-53 Super Stallion, and actually am excited to own a 1/72 scale XB-70 Valkerie which was one of, if not the most beautful aircraft ever built. Only two were made and one of those crashed in an accident during a photo shoot when an F-104 accidently ran into it and exploded, damaging the bomber badly enough where it could not stay airborn. Capable of Mach 3 and 70,000+ feet, she was a beauty. There was a contract to build the first 30-40 of them, but when the ICBMs tested so successfully, McNamara ended up killing it. Too bad. Had we built a couple of hundred of those I am sure probably 50-100 would still be flying today. Like the B-52, a huge airframe with lots of room to add all the neat updates we have come up with over the years.

For the Russians I own a SU-27 Flanker, a Mig-31 Foxhound, Mig-27 Flogger, a Mig-29 Fulcrum and a Mi-24 Hind and KA-50 Hokum (Black Shark) attack helicopters. I recently bought an SU-35 Flanker Eand am really excited about my new SU-34 Fullback which I think is one of Russia's most beautiful aircraft...and will be a very strong, long range strike aircraft.

I did get two Rafaels for the French in 1/72 scale too, the Rafael M carrier variant, and the Rafael B two seater air force version. They are really nice aircraft as well.

Here's a couple of pics of some of my 1/72 scale models:

In that last one, the P-3C and EA-6B are up for sale on ebay right now...gotta make way for the new!

Anyhow, I really like this J-20 model from Trumpeter and the way it is put together, and am looking forward to building it.

When I build mine I am planning on building from scratch the weapons bay, at least the large lower one, and probably scribing lines into the fuselage for the ones on the side.
