A Caption for the new images :

This image shows an engine that isn't of the AL-31 series. The engine is supposedly an indigenous Chinese engine of the WS-10 series ( WS-10C ?) with a thrust (rumored) to be anywhere between 13.5 to 14 tons (137 kN). The serrated engine nozzles are better suited for stealth. The engine does not have a TVC capability.

The optimal engine that ought to power J-20 in the future (around 2025) would have
- Thrust anywhere from 165 kN to 180 kN
- 3D thrust vectoring
-serrated nozzles for Stealth
-ceramic coatings for IR signature reduction

There's an outstanding lesson here for the proponents of a "tailless" J-20, or any other fighter aircraft for that matter..... there are times when you absolutely NEED all the control authority you can manage, this maneuver "ain't gonna happen" without those TWO all flying Verts....

and the nonsense Will Roper's flying circus talk of a B-21 with air to air missiles as our next "air dominance" platform is just some much "bull krap".....

could you throw a couple of A2A missiles on a B-21 for self defense? of course, but don't use a flying grocery cart for an air dominance platform..

by the way, I will be posting some tailless J-20 pixs, hopefully soon???

The bigger question is, where's the 3D TVC? Or rather, were 3D TVC to be actually installed on the J-20, if you look at the tail booms, there isn't actually enough space for full yaw on the TVC, not without modifying the nozzle location (further back) or the tailbooms.

Tailless is impling that you use TVC for yaw control instead of traditional control surfaces.

Yeah, I forgot, I was one of the people who first pointed out that the WS-10 TVC had two-section TVC to limit nozzle dealignment from the stealth shape. It seems as though the two-section TVC also helps to keep the exhaust flow within the tailbooms, but you still have proximity issues.

In the F-35's case, with just a conventional tail, the F-35 engine at high speeds and power ends up burning its own horizontal stabilizers. But the WS-15 is expected to be somewhat cooler than the F-35 (about 50-100C difference), and the tailbooms can be modified more easily than the F-35's horizontal stabilizers as it's a non-moving part.
