Well, in the future, lasers can potentially also be used as active defense against missiles, hence forcing the adversary to launch an overwhelming number of missiles in a saturation attack, or close in to use their own lasers. While it is unlikely for lasers to replace missiles, it may complement them.

To get to 40km range or so, or whatever might be needed to counter missiles (Mach 6 implies that 40 km can be bypassed in 24 seconds vs a Mach 6 hypersonic missile), you'd need highly substantial power outputs. If laser dispersal means that doubling of range requires four times the energy, to reach 40 km you'd need about 100 times the energy of the 100 kW 4km Silent Hunter system, or about 10 MW. The F135 engine on the F-35 is producing 50 MW at Mach .9.

Also, I'll point out that the 100 kW Silent Hunter system is a large truck-mounted system. The miniaturization of lasers might take a while and might stop at hard physical limits.

A curious question, in the event that F-35 is equiped with laser gun, what will happen to F-35 if it diverted 10MW of its power output to fire laser? Will there be any effect on its speed and flight performance?

Or is it possible to generated 10MW in advance in a capacitor and discharge the energy via laser shooting?

To create 10 mw through an alternator, you'll lose a fair bit more mechanical energy from the connected shaft.
I'm not sure about numbers but f35b lift fans direct about 20k lb thrust from the main shaft which could be replaced by a static field alternator to produce enough power for the laser. The biggest problem will be miniaturizing the elements with which a high energy laser is made rather than the pump(source).

"Viper has the Lead!, I don't know if BD Popeye will agree with me, but only the J-20 has the "presence" of the F-14. I know "Top Gun Maverick", isn't out yet, but the Chinese should definitely start working on "Top Gun III, Lei Gang!"

just saying? what do you think BD, that bottom picture is def very "Tomcat!"
