There is actually just as much freedom in everyday Chinese society as there is freedom in US society, in fact I would argue there is more of that in China, because here in US the PC/twitter police will make your life miserable if you are not careful about what you say.

And yes, you can actually openly criticize the Chinese government, and yes, you can openly discuss politics open on the street. You ONLY get in trouble if you literally try to organize efforts to destabilize the society or join groups that wants to overthrown the government etc...

The impression of China have no freedom you are getting is from your own "free media" who will take every single chance to bash China to make themselves look better.

Don't believe me? Go take a trip to China, airfare is really cheap these days.

This is not quite true. While China is no where near as bad as some may try to portray it but come on. More "freedoms" than in the US society? That's more conspiracy than anything else. Only US still allows citizens their "right" to arms. Right to protest 1% as silly as that may be. Right to hold ridiculous events and forms of expression that are clearly counter progress and totally based on unfounded conspiracy theories. China is pretty good today but every effort made in the right direction does not require any exaggeration. But yes, people can express their political opinions relatively openly now. It wasn't always the case.

  • I think the biggest disconnect is the perceived freedom in media. Other than that it is just living your own lives. There is considerably more censorship (that you can feel it directly) in China however behind the doors we don't know how much dirty things the governments have done.
  • Owning firearms is special to US. Most other countries do not allow it and can still be "free" at the same time.
  • Freedom to protest is actually allowed in China but the police has a much smaller likelihood to approve your application.
  • Sometimes the US society is easier because you can always have something to complain about within your country. In China if you complain your story may feature in CNN the next day and people will nominate you for Nobel Peace Prize

It is true in China a part of the access to Internet is forbidden or limited ? maybe YouTube by example.

Yes it is blocked because porn is actually illegal (that is the reason given). However anyone who wants to access youtube can find VPNs to do it, that includes pretty much anyone I know. The real reason preventing more Chinese using the English internet is language.

Facebook/twitter and a few others are blocked because their roles in Arab Spings and other Color Revolution. That is, mainly due to political reasons.

I think if the political environment eases up the internet blocking will stop. Not any time soon though. The entire Western culture is considered hostile as of today. Much of that is lack of understanding from both sides.

For now if the youtube video has potential viewership it will be copied to other video sharing Chinese sites so the person making the copy can earn some ads impressions. Those guys keep the cultural exchange going.

On the other side there are also plenty of patriotic/nationalistic/politically incorrect websites in China, the equivalent of 4chan or 2ch. By my standard a lot of users are irrational. In all countries they exist but in China they exist in much larger numbers due to the population base. Maybe this internet blockage thing allows a cleaner Internet for the rest of us. Just like the stock market, information exchange can be manipulated and it can go out of hands quickly.

No way. There are much more freedoms in China than in the US. In China, you can drink alcohol at any age; in the US, you can serve in the military and kill people at 18 but alcohol is for when you're 21. In China, as an employer, you can hire/fire people for any reason you want because it's your money and your business; in the US, you have to worry about 26 different kinds of discrimination and how you might be sued. In China, during an argument, you may use any kind of curse or slang to attack someone; in the US even some words are taboo to call other people, which is truly no freedom of speech. In China, if a police officer issues you a citation but you have an explanation for why you did what you did, you have the freedom to explain and argue with him; in the US, he'll tell you to tell it to the judge (which is a full day off work for you to go to court even if you did nothing wrong) and if you take it any further, you will likely be arrested or beaten (less likely if you're white and upper class though).

These freedoms are the ones that matter to my life and the lives of most people, not the "freedom" to protest, which, actually, doesn't truly exist in either country. In China, you may protest only in designated areas where your activities do not disrupt the activities of others; in the US, you can protest as long as it doesn't have any effect, otherwise, it can end with you getting a taste of their hydro-cannon in subzero temperatures if it interferes with oil pipeline construction (Keyestone).
