A new photo recently posted on a Chinese forum shows a J-20 yellow paint flying. According to its author, it is the "13th J-20", without giving further explanations.

Rumors have been raging since, many believe that the 13th series aircraft is out of the assembly line in Chengdu and is already in flight.

This statement, although very "sexy", is however little credible given the rate of production observed so far. The most plausible explanation is that this is the 13th J-20 since the start of the program, in other words, since the first technology demonstrator flew for the first time on January 11, 2011.

This J-20 would thus be the 13th aircraft (in flight) of the 718 program, but simply the 5th aircraft of series production, after the two technological demonstrators and the six prototypes.

And we can reasonably think that this picture would not have been taken very recently.Indeed, the other spotters of Chengdu had indicated at the end of May last year that "the 5th of series is out of assembly line", and so it is exactly the same camera that we have on the picture.

Assuming that this fifth aircraft is out of the chain at the end of May 2016, and based on the duration of the six J-20 prototypes between their first flight and the date of delivery to the test center, Flight, which is 112 days (~ 4 months) on average, it seems excessively long that a series or pre-series aircraft takes more than 4 months to prepare for the ground before the first flight, Delivered today.

Be that as it may, we can be certain that at least four J-20s of series have been photographed with a registration, ranging from 78271 to 78274. This new bird in yellow should therefore receive the official registration 78275.

The fact that the 5th J-20 series is in flight - 13th overall - suggests that the production of this unique Chinese Very Low Observable (VLO) aircraft is going well.

, which would allow the Chinese Air Force to equip at least one new regiment and position the front line, on the east coast of China.

To admit esp. since I always admire H.K. very much for his analysis, but here I don't agree with him.

The 13th J-20 overall for the whole program is unlikely:

We know for sure 2001, 2002 (= now 2004 even if I still don't know why !?), 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 & 2017 = 8 aircraft

Then for the LRIP-birds we know for sure 2101 but we also know since some time (September/October) images showing at least 4 LRIP birds - 2 yellow + 2 grey ones - together, we also know from around the same time - namely since October/November - 2 birds in plain grey + 2 in splinter and again several with still yellow birds behind.

As such I think it is very unlikely that there are only 5 LRIP-J-20As out there and given that unique high-resolution image from October assuming no. 11, I think already 13 LRIP birds is highly likely.

What you described is exactly what Henri K suggested in the rest of his write up, in the paragraph immediately after the one you quoted:

"This J-20 would thus be the 13th aircraft (in flight) of the 718 program, but simply the 5th aircraft of series production, after the two technological demonstrators and the six prototypes."

I think deino means we can be certain that there are already more than 5 serial production J-20 thus more than 13 total if you count prototype and demonstrator. So 13 should be the number of serial production jets.

My mistake -- I misread completely
-facepalm-

Actually, the first time I read his reply that is what I thought he meant, but then when I read it again I somehow convinced myself he meant what henri k wrote lol.


And yes, I agree that 13 LRIP J-20s by now seems sensible, and I'd be surprised if only 5 LRIP J-20s have been produced.

To remind everyone: Chinese fighter jets are built in batches. It is not serial production, an other way of production used when products are made at a higher rate. As far as I know, i.e. as described by the experts on this forum, even J-10 is produced in batches.

what is the main difference of "Serial" and "Batches" ? ... sorry for this simple question, I just need to be sure
