F-22 canopy looks bigger with better visibility. Radar on the J-20 appears bigger. F-22 crams 1956 T/R modules into that tiny nose :eek:.

Heh! Heh! the F-22 set the standard on the first 15 feet of the forward fuselage on every fifth gen, canopy, chining, although several do have a turtle deck aft of the pilots seat. That shaping is very effective in L/O and in generating tons of forward fuse lift, all good, all the time! That's a great canopy, though the Electro optical DAS is likely the new standard, and a fabulous tool along with the HMS of the F-35 and others.

It doesn't work this way in radar technology.


There are three things that determine the number of T/R modules. Firstly, the physical size of the aperture is obvious in that the more space available the more modules that can be packed. Secondly is the available packaging technology that enables an optimal density corresponding to the third determinant i.e. targeted frequency. All fighter planes with radar essentially operates in the "X" band which has a frequency range but for simplicity say it is 10 GHz. This translates to a 3 cm wavelength. The rule of thumb for T/R spacing is half a wavelength apart which gives a 90 degree FOV without any grating lobes. For a technical explanation, please refer to technical literature below :

Just a guess .... what unit will be the first to get the new J-20A ???

Will it be the same 170. Brigade within the FTTC ?? .. or another unit?

I certainly prefer the way the F-22 cockpit position.

I'm not sure if you can compare the cockpit position in these two photos. We can't tell whether the two pilots sit with similar posture. Yes, the F-22 pilot looks to be sitting higher. However, he seems to be looking to his right and looking up. If he accompanies these movements with a slight tilting of his body to the right and up, his right side will look to be positioned higher (and his left shoulder down), making him look to be sitting higher up. On the other hand, the J-20 pilot is sitting straight and still with some of his shoulder shown. Now, if you imagine the J-20 pilot adopting the same posture as the F-22 pilot, looking up to his right and tilting his body slightly up, he will show more of his shoulder just as the F-22 pilot.

We also don't know about the height of the pilots. Not saying which cockpit is better, just saying that these two photos might not be good examples to compare...

These photos may also not be perfect, but both pilots seem to be sitting with similar posture, sitting straight up, looking down playing with their equipment in front of them. Both show all of their upper arms, positioned at similar angle to the cockpit.

You are right my post failed to credit author but it also reminded me that I should not have included it in the first place. I will PM mod. to remove it as my concern is IP violation.
