Very interesting, it seems like all of these photos are new but all of these photos were taken when 2016 and 2017 still had mock up EO IRSTs rather than functional ones that we've been seeing for the last few weeks.

So these are probably releases of photos deliberately kept for the occasion.

Yep, there appears to be two or three 'official' photographers for Chengdu. All of their photos are incredibly professional and taken within the premises. I subscribe to their Weibo accounts because they have a habit of 'drip-feeding' great images.

that said, the NGJ pod will use GaN AESAs, so technically it does fit the bill even if the array itself doesn't fill traditional radar roles.
NGJ is still a few years away.

Not exactly -- the big difference is that GaN can sustain much higher peak powers than GaA
The reason why thermal management has become the technological hurdle to deploy GaN.

2016 looks better than the first photo (F-22), smoother and the radar seems a lot bigger. Is the first photo a prototype or production model of F-22 ?

J-20's radome is bigger than that of F-22, that's been accepted for quite a few years now. It is a production F-2.

The difference in "smoothness" is probably due to differing lighting conditions and/or camera settings by the photographers. Some conditions/settings also show J-20 with more visible panels in the airframe as well.

Don't infer too much from two mere photos.

Seems that the J-20 has a lower cockpit. I wonder if 2017 raised it to improve the field of view.
