Today it depends, on the level of systems management available by the Computers.
Back in the day it was more critical. In 3rd gen fighters and early 4th gen it was critical as the electric systems, weapons and Radar were more attention demanding. So the pilot needed an extra set of eyes, hands and brains to operate those.
Those fighters often omitted any ability for the back seater to fly the plane.
The Russians even debated using the back seater station for operations command in Mig25 where the back seater would have been a senior officer who would have commanded forces in operation like a Super sonic awacs. Nothing ever came of it though.

In some 4th gens the back seater is more specialized to air to ground. Navigating, operating jammer pods, and preparing for ground attack well the pilot can focus on flying the bird. In later versions the back seater can even fly the plane.

I thought that the MIG-25 twin-seater variant didn’t have a radar since the front cockpit took up the space for a radar?

It’s entirely possible that I am wrong. I remember it from one of those decade old Cable Documentaries from late Soviet early post Soviet TV.

I am wrong it was early Mig31. Mig25 skipped the Radar in the two seater Mig31 came with two seats standard.

right the USN and Marines flew an F-4 with RIO's with NO flight controls for the backseater, the USAF WSO's, (prounounced "WeeZo's" had a stick and throttle, but no rudders for "yaw" control... there was at least one Air Force WeeZo, who's pilot was seriously injured when a bird strike broke the windshield, who successfully recovered the aircraft with only the stick and throttle, of course with NO rudder pedals?? NO Brakes!

He saved the pilots life and brought an Air Force F-4 home safely even with serious battle damage, with just throttle and Pitch and Roll...... amazing airmanship!

In the F-14 no stick or rudder, in the F-15E you get it all, and I believe the same is true in the F-18's??

I don’t find it big news unless a whole production batch is fitted with indigenous engine

We have single J10 with TVC no big deal

Unless it’s production line engine which will fit the whole next batch it’s not a big deal

I think that is exactly what the recent images and rumours might be teasing.
