J-10 Thread IV

I am skeptical about the F-35 parity part (when it comes to the J-10B/C). But, one thing, the rumor was that the J-16 has a 360' passive system like in the J-20 (Kind of like the AN/ALR-94 or AN/ASQ-239). Looks like the J-10C (and even the J-10B) have at least a watered down version of what is in the J-20 and J-16.

I remember many years ago when the J-10B 1st appeared there was a comment or two claiming it had plasma-stealth or some kind of active-stealth

. Naturally we all laughed at it

.

The question that has been bugging me for a long time is, were they testing a Rafale like Active Cancellation system on the J-10B? Any word from 'big shrimps'?

You are welcome!

Since it is systematic confrontation, J-10 only plays a small part in this scenarios. There will be extensive support assets to keep the pressure on, be it ground radar/missile installations, or J-20/J-16D/KJ-2000 in the sky, so J-10B can throw some punches.

It is 3D TVC. Just not a full 360' degree movement.
Su-37, F-22: 2D TVC. Only up/down (Y-axis) and the nozzles don't move independently.
Su-30MKI/MKM/MKA, Su-30SM, Su-35 and Su-57: Up/down only but nozzles move independantly and they are rotated 30' degree inwards -

.
F-16 VISTA, F-15 ACTIVE, MiG-29OVT and most recently the J-10B TVC have full 360' degree movement but there are no aircraft with this feature in service (yet).

But the Su35 TVC ARE 2D, they’re just slanted.

What Hyperwarp said.

Think of the Su-35/Su-30 nozzles as the TVC equivalent of the YF-23 V-tail - thanks to the slanted axis, they are able to provide yaw control in addition to pitch & roll.

What is really interesting and rarely spoken about is the real capabilities of PLAAF 4th and 5th gen electronic warfare abilities. There is little information around that can be considered well researched or coming from reliable sources. We only hear of official news reports of military drills mentioning such and such group did some exercise under jamming conditions but no detail on what Chinese electronic warfare abilities are actually like.

It is unfathomable for Chinese planners and industry directors to completely ignore the latest advancements in the EW arena. Like their peers overseas, they must understand that EW is really quite possibly the most important aspect of modern warfare. For the J-10 (and any other modern PLAAF fighter) surely there have been programs working on SPECTRA/ Arexis like systems. We have seen DAS systems on J-20, indicating PLAAF's recognition of important qualities in a 5th gen platform and following the Lockheed Martin's approach there. It would be unlikely to leave electronic "cloaking" technologies unexplored since we've seen PLA branches be exceptionally adaptive and using vast arrays of foreign ideas, like any and all other players. Of course some are certainly well ahead of the curve. There are few areas where China is doing something different like AShBM (the Soviets never managed to make this idea work due to warhead and tracking technology limitations), Satellite detection, quantum comms, near space anti-stealth UAVs etc but Chinese designers never leave a good foreign idea untested or uncopied.

There is very little literature found online giving any detail on any nation's EW technologies and what they are able to achieve. It appears though this is intentionally hiding their abilities and achievements from becoming investigated and copied by other defense companies and researchers. I recall reading claims from years ago of J-10s locking onto Vietnamese Su-30s without being detected and doing something similar to Indian Su-30MKIs too. If those rumours are truthful and accurate, would that not be hinting at the very least some superior command of EW? Israeli F-16 have managed to destroy Russian sourced SAM systems and the targets they were protecting since the 90s. Every time, evading radar and spoofing missiles (as claimed at least). This isn't just the old flying low strategy. If Gripen Arexis abilities are as advanced as claimed i.e. being able to sneak up on Non-AESA Typhoons, then certainly there are ways currently built into or can be installed on J-10s (and Sino Flankers) that make them more threatening against 5th gens, in a defensive and heavily supported airspace.

In 2017, J-10B was seen with K/RKL700A EW pod: (photo credits:

J-10B will carry it and anti-radiation missiles on SEAD missions. The same pod is also seen on Su-30MKK and JH-7A. (Photo source:
