J-10 Thread IV

Q5 may have an obsolete role but basic flight training and basic maintenance knowledge is still worth something. Airbase and whole infrastructure is worth something. If one is going to increase numbers in a few years, why not keep those crews and infrastructure for a few years, rather than starting from scratch later on?
True, but that’s why you have trainers now, and even with the value of basic routine and training it probably makes a lot of sense not to stick your expensive pilots in aging planes. At the end of the day the value of all that stuff is in the personnel and not the unit, and I can’t imagine that the personnel is being retired so much as reassigned.

I don't imagine first j10s will need replacements in 2025. By then, they'll barely be 20 years old. If old j7s and j8 are soldiering on, some being over 30 years in service, i find it highly unlikely j10 will have a shorter life span. As for J11a, they're allegedly beefed up versions compared to original su27, which might mean they have a longer lifespan. (possibly the reason why some of the earliest su27 have been retired years ago while others still soldier on, as the first batch was made to a different structural standard and later batches were beefed up upon PLAAF's request) Even so, in 2025 they would be just 25 or so years old.
Perhaps not directly replaced per say, but they might get pushed down to younger units while more experienced units get newer planes. I think how quickly those airframes get replaced outright entirely depends on the intensity of their usage and how expansive the political decision makers want the PLAAF to be, but I can definitely see a scenario where 20 year old J-10As might get retired...

Well, original F16c had projected lifespan of 6000 hrs. (which has then been pushed to 8000, and now 12,000 hrs seems possible). Even if PLAAF flies 250 hrs per plane per year (higher than US really), that's 24 years of such hours for F16c comparable lifespan. And it's likely that 2005-2010 period plaaf did not fly j10s quite as much, even if they do it today. At 220 hrs per year per plane that's 27 years. And 8000 hours shouldn't be out of reach either with one serious refit. Potentially 32-35 years.

So retiring j10 at 20 years of age would either be A) Political or B) would mean j10s are designed to a different standard in the first place, made less sturdier than f16 for example, basically trading off lifespan for weight/thrust and weight/lift ratios, meaning trading off lifespan for performance.

I think much simpler answer is this: Chinese AF does not intend to buy 80ish planes per year and production rate will not reach those averages in the foreseeable future (save for a new arms race) Chengdu will probably lower its j10 production rate once J20 production fully ramps up, and j20 will never be produced in more than 20-ish airframes per year, as long as SAC is kept as a player and getting a piece of the production pie.

are you sure they are all fuel, that centerline tank is different and has no apparent stabilizer fins, or am I missing them?

The center one does have horizontal stabilizer fins. If it's not fuel tank, it could be some kind of cargo pod? It sure doesn't look munition-related, not even a bomblet dispenser.

I would suspect an avionics package or something similar,, ECM or,, I'm sure somebody here will straighten us out?? LOL

Has this photo been posted before? Nice shot
J-10B carrying KG700 ECM pod, PL-8, PL-12 & drop tanks takes off.
Seem like J10 with the whole work. What is it on the far left? Dummy missile?

Yep, it will haul quite a load, is that the avionics package on the left forward fuselage? you can see the 600 gallon or so tanks outboard dwarf the small center line tank.
