Italian Defence Minister: We won’t buy any more F-35s, may cut existing order..

ROME (Reuters) - Italy will not buy more Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter jets and is considering whether to stick to the order to which it is already committed, Defence Minister Elisabetta Trenta said on Friday.

Trenta comes from the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement which has always been critical of NATO member Italy’s order for 90 of the planes, saying the money could be better spent to boost welfare and help the sluggish economy.

Trenta comes from the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement which has always been critical of NATO member Italy’s order for 90 of the planes, saying the money could be better spent to boost welfare and help the sluggish economy.

“We won’t buy any more F-35s,” Trenta said in a television interview with private broadcaster La 7. “We are assessing what to do regarding the contracts already in place.”

She spelled out several reasons to be cautious, saying that “strong financial penalties” could mean that “scrapping the order could cost us more than maintaining it.”

She also cited benefits in terms of technology and research in Italy linked to the planes, as well as jobs that would be lost.

The F-35 is made by Lockheed Martin Corp, with companies including Northrop Grumman Corp, United Technologies Corp’s Pratt & Whitney and BAE Systems Plc also involved.

However, Trenta said she saw merit in stretching out the purchases in order to free up resources for investments in European defense projects.

Some 5-Star officials said last year that Italy should cancel the order for the fighters altogether, but Trenta made clear she had reservations about this.

“No one is hiding the fact we have always been critical ... In view of the existing contracts signed by the previous government, we are carrying out a careful assessment that exclusively considers the national interest,” she said.

The 5-Star Movement formed a populist coalition government last month with the far right League party.

    Unbelievably short-sighted and crazy.

They can make a lot of money with the manufcturing and maintenance fcilty they have...in addition, they need the new aircraft fr their Navy and Air Force to stay competitive.

So many European countries are committing suicide by liberal-welfare.

In this picture of the Taranto Military Harbor, You can see an interesting collection of some of the most representative ships of the Italian Navy.

    1. CVH Cavour (left above). This carrier is the flagship of the Navy, it operates AV-8B Harriers and will start embarking its F-35B fleet in 2020
    2. CVL Garibaldi (right above). This was the first Italian carrier to enter service. Today it operates AV-8B Harriers in alternative to its larger sister CVH Cavour. This carrier will be substituted in 2022 by a much larger carrier, the LHA Trieste (33.000 tons/265 mt), that will also embark F-35B
    3. DDG Horizon class (right above), one of the two modern DDGs of this class common with the French Navy. The ship is undergoing upgrade works.
    4. DDG De la Penne class (right below), one of the two old DDGs of this class, to be subsituted by two new DDGs in the laste 20's (the so called DDX). DDXs will likely be a another common Italo-French design, derived from the Horizon class
    5. 3 x FREMM FFGs (all up), another Italo-French design. the Italian Navy operates 10 of such FFGs. Six in General Purpose layout and 4 ASW
    6. One Mastrale class FFG (left below), an old class of FFGs currently being retired and being subsituted by the 10 x FREMM class FFGs and the 7 x PPA class FFGs
    7. One classe Lupo FFGs. Also this class is being phased out in favor of the larger and more performing FREMM/PPA classes.

According to the last official Naval Programme introduced in the Italian Senate last month by the NAvy Chief of Staff, the Italian Navy will operate in the 30's with a fleet made of:

    1 x CVH Cavour - F-35B
    1 x LHA Trieste - F-35B
    3 x LHDs of a new class
    4 x DDGs
    10 x FREMM FFGs
    7 x PPA class FFGs
    6 x PPX corvettes
    10 x Mine Layers
1 x Command and Logistic Ship
2 x Large Logistic Ships (another common design with France)
