ANKARA | By Dasha Afanasieva

Companies from 20 countries are involved in the supply chain of components that end up in Islamic State explosives, a study found on Thursday, suggesting governments and firms need to do more to track the flow of cables, chemicals and other equipment.

The European Union-mandated study showed that 51 companies from countries including Turkey, Brazil, and the United States produced, sold or received the more than 700 components used by Islamic State to build improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

IEDs are now being produced on a "quasi-industrial scale" by the militant group, which uses both industrial components that are regulated and widely available equipment such as fertiliser chemicals and mobile phones, according to Conflict Armament Research (CAR), which undertook the 20-month study.

Islamic State controls large swathes of Iraq and Syria. NATO member Turkey shares borders with both countries and has stepped up security to prevent the flow of weapons and insurgents to the hardline Sunni group.

A total of 13 Turkish firms were found to be involved in the supply chain, the most in any one country. That was followed by India with seven.

"These findings support growing international awareness that IS forces in Iraq and Syria are very much self-sustaining — acquiring weapons and strategic goods, such as IED components, locally and with ease," said James Bevan, CAR's executive director.

The sale of these cheap and readily available parts, some of which are not subject to government export licences, is far less scrutinised and regulated than the transfer of weapons.

The study found that Islamic State is able to acquire some components in as a little as a month after their lawful supply to firms in the region, suggestion a lack of oversight in the supply chain.

"Companies having effective accounting systems to establish where the goods went after them would act as a deterrent," Bevan said.

'REFUSED TO COOPERATE'

Bevan said the Turkish government refused to cooperate with CAR's investigation so the group was not able to determine the efficacy of Ankara's regulations regarding the tracking of components.

Turkish government officials did not reply to requests for comment.

CAR gained access to the components through partners including the Washington-backed Kurdish YPG in Syria, the Iraqi Federal Police, the Kurdistan Region Security Council and forces of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

The components were recovered during major battles around the Iraqi towns of al Rabia, Kirkuk, Mosul, and Tikrit and the Syrian town of Kobani.

The report's authors said they attempted to contact the companies linked to the components, adding the firms did not respond or were not able to account for where the goods went after they left their custody.

Seven Indian companies manufactured most of the detonators, detonating cord, and safety fuses documented by CAR. Those were all legally exported under government-issued licences from India to entities in Lebanon and Turkey, CAR found.

Companies from Brazil, Romania, Russia, the Netherlands, China, Switzerland, Austria and Czech Republic were also involved, the report found.

The key is the always the borders between Syria and her neighbours, especially Turkey.

Which companies of which countries in whatever corners of the planet do not really matter. Nobody can or should bother to trace and block where the fertilizer or shampoo (which can also be used to make bombs) goes. Putting much effort on this study looks more like a diversion in my opinion.

Rumors swirled around Syria on Saturday that the Syrian government’s only supply route to the Aleppo Governorate was recaptured by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies after they secured the integral village of Hammam in northeast Hama.

As it turns out; this was not the case, as the so-called “Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham” (ISIS) enjoys full control over the Al-‘Azeeb Checkpoint that is located along the Sheikh Hilal-Ithriyah Road.

Despite the news about the government supply route still being cutoff, the Syrian Arab Army’s “Tiger Forces” – in close coordination with Hezbollah, the Republican Guard, and the National Defense Forces (NDF) – were able to capture a number of points along the Sheikh Hilal-Ithriyah Road, leaving only the Al-‘Azeeb Checkpoint under ISIS control.

The Syrian Armed Forces are expected seize this last checkpoint in the coming hours, which will finally secure this important government supply route.

However, the Syrian Armed Forces will have to build a larger buffer-zone around this important supply route to the Aleppo Governorate, as it has been cutoff by ISIS at least 2 times in the last 5 months.

Syrian Army prepares for largest military operation to liberate Tabaqa

The Syrian Arab Army’s “Tiger Forces” will not be returning to the east Aleppo front anytime soon because they have now been tasked with a different objective that will make their past missions seem minuscule in comparison to the present.

Following the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham’s (ISIS) abrupt offensive that cutoff the Syrian government’s only supply route to the Aleppo Governorate, the Tiger Forces were given direct orders from Syrian Arab Army’s Central Command to redeploy to the desert-city of Ithriya and await further instruction.

Since the Khanasser-Aleppo Road is now free of danger, the Tiger Forces and their pro-government allies are preparing for what is likely to be the largest military operation launched during this brutal conflict.

The Tiger Forces’ presence in Ithriya is no coincidence, they are going to assault the western countryside of the Al-Raqqa Governorate and they are going to lead the operation to liberate the Tabaqa Military Airport from ISIS.

The desert-city of Ithriya is strategically located in the Hama Governorate’s northeastern countryside; it borders the Aleppo Governorate to the north and it is situated 15 km west of the Al-Raqqa axis.

This operation is part of a much larger military initiative that includes the recapture of Palmyra (Tadmur) and Jaroud Qarah in the Qalamoun Mountains from ISIS.

Sources from the Tiger Forces have confirmed their location and they have even provided insight into their future operations.

When will this offensive start? It is likely going to begin in the coming weeks as the local militias and the Syrian Arab Army clean-up the Khanasser countryside.
This offensive cannot be a surprise to anyone except its timing which is not given here. Now that there is a cease fire with all "rebels" except Al Nusrah and its allies and Daesh SAA has some more power to drive Daesh out of Tabaqa which would cut the connection of Daesh with Turkey.

01 March
GREECE

Greek coast guard apprehended Togo-flagged 76-m coastal freighter “Kuki Boy” off Rhodes ... loaded with weapons and explosives ... coming from Izmir (Turkey) with claimed destination Lebanon ... taken to Souda Bay (Crete) for further investigation.
(rmks: receipient unclear, might have been Lebanese Hezbollah)
A bizarre supposition. Hezbollah is helping in Syria to fight "rebels" sponsored by Turkey. The cargo was more likely intended for those "rebels" whose supply route from Turkey has been cut by the Syrian army and the Russian air force. I imagine the Russians will have tipped off the Greeks.

Over 200 killed in Kurds-Daesh clashes on Turkey-Syria border
Wed Mar 2, 2016 6:42PM

Fighters from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) have clashed with the Takfiri Daesh terrorists near the Turkish border over the weekend, leaving a total of 206 people dead, among them civilians.

YPG official Redur Xelil said on Wednesday that 43 of the group’s members lost their lives during the battle, which began on Saturday and ended on Monday, in the Syrian town of Tal Abyad.

The YPG have 140 bodies of Daesh elements killed in the fighting, with the Kurdish forces keeping control of the town, Xelil added.

The official said the Tal Abyad confrontation claimed the lives of 23 civilians as well.

The YPG, which is nearly in control of Syria’s entire northern border with Turkey, has been fighting against Daesh. The Kurdish fighters liberated Tal Abyad from the grips of Daesh last year.

Angered by the rapid advance of Syrian Kurdish fighters in areas near the Turkish frontier, Ankara shelled their positions inside Syria last month.

Ankara fears further expansion by the YPG will foment what it calls separatist sentiment among Turkish Kurds.

The Turkish government regards the YPG and its affiliate, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), as allies of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been fighting for an autonomous Kurdish region inside Turkey since the 1980s.

Ankara has been engaged in a large-scale campaign against the PKK in its southern border region in the past few months. However, activists argue that clashes have led to the death of civilians and inflicted major damage to the buildings and infrastructure in the southeastern region of the country.
