Senior officers risking their own lives to better lead the troops and spare their lives as far as possible. You saw the same in early Israeli wars.

on Friday, Nov 6, at 2:43 PM,
[...]and, btw, you anticipated the taking of Kuweires in a couple of days? rather, give them 'til after the weekend, after they've had a chance to utilize the Tartus to Hama to Salamiyah to Ithriyah to Khannasser to Safirah highway (the reasoning for my Hama to Aleppo highway offensive should, now, be obvious) to supply sufficient ordinance, and other goodies, to get the job done right.

The offensive to take Kuweires has begun!!!

On Monday afternoon, the Syrian Arab Army’s “Cheetah Forces” – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Aleppo City and Kataebat Al-Ba’ath (Al-Ba’ath Battalions) – broke-through the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham’s (ISIS) frontline defenses at the strategic town of Sheikh Ahmad in the Deir Hafer Plains and imposed full control over this large area after a series of intense firefights this week.

According to a military source from the Tiger Forces in the city of Al-Safira, the Cheetah Forces and their allies are less than 2km away from lifting the two year long siege at the Kuweries Military Airport; if successful, this will be a devastating defeat for ISIS in the Aleppo Governorate’s eastern countryside.

The Cheetah Forces launched this large-scale offensive to lift the siege on the Kuweires Military Airport in early October; and since then, they have captured over 200 square kilometers of territory from the ISIS militants that were deeply entrenched along this volatile front.

The Kuweires Military Airport has been under a two year long siege that was imposed by ISIS; however, with the Cheetah Forces and their allies advancing to the southwestern perimeter of this large base, the siege is expected to end as soon as the pro-government forces break-through the terrorist group’s final line of defense.

Al-Masdar News has been informed that the Cheetah Forces are currently combatting ISIS along the military housing that sits outside of the base; they can be expected to lift the siege soon.

URGENT: Syrian Forces Win Full Control over Key Town in Aleppo
13940722000159_PhotoI.jpg

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian army completed control over Sheikh Ahmad town in Aleppo countryside on Monday winning a decisive battle in a chain of operations to lift a 2.5-year siege on Kuweires Airbase.
A military source said the army, backed by popular forces, eventually managed to purge all parts of the town that is located in the Eastern countryside of Aleppo from the Takfiri militants.

There are no immediate reports about the exact numbers of the terrorists' casualties.

The Syrian Army, National Defense Forces (NDF) and Hezbollah fighters could win a major part of Sheikh Ahmad after several days of fierce battles and came closer to the strategic Kuweires Airbase.

The Syrian army troops, the NDF fighters and the Lebanese Hezbollah forces, backed up by the Russian fighter jets, on Saturday tightened noose around the ISIL terrorists near Sheikh Ahmad and its surrounding areas to lift over a two-year-long siege of the strategic Kuweires airbase.

The Saturday reports said that the government forces were very close to seize full control over Sheikh Ahmad after killing tens of Takfiri terrorists, but yet said that the army had prevailed no more than 90 percent of the town.

Reports on Monday evening said the army has completed its control over the town and is preparing to take the final step towards Kuweires airbase.

Last week, the Syrian army, popular forces and Hezbollah backed up by Russian warplanes started massive operations and came almost half a mile closer to the Kuweires airport in a region where advance in every inch has taken days.

The pro-government forces marched on ISIL positions in the region and advanced to the rural district of Sheikh Ahmad after taking full control of the railway crossing.

The Syrian army and Hezbollah deployed their forces in a region only 2 kilometers away from the airbase.

At the time, the government forces were preparing to mop up the rest of Sheikh Ahmad to prepare for a massive offensive on ISIL positions along the Aleppo-Raqqa Highway. Some 80 percent of Sheikh Ahmad - that is seen as a milestone in the Damascus war on terrorist groups in the Northern province of Aleppo – was under the control of the pro-government forces last week.

Army sources said the Russian strikers have played a very crucial role in the operation.

Last week, commanders of the Syrian army, popular forces, Hezbollah and Russian Air Force held a meeting in Sheikh Ahmad frontline to coordinate the last phase of their joint operation for removing the two-year-long ISIL siege on Kuweires airbase, Southeast of Aleppo.

Military sources said at the time that the pro-government forces were deployed in most parts of Sheikh Ahmad, just 2,600 meters far farm the Southern gates of the strategic Kuweires airbase.

The joint operations of the Syrian army troops, Hezbollah fighters and NDF that have been underway with the Russian air backup for the last two months have forced the militant groups, specially the ISIL, to withdraw from the Southern parts of Sheikh Ahmad town near the Kuweires airbase.

Sources said that the militant groups have suffered heavy casualties in the latest stage of the pro-government troops' joint operations.

Now the pro-government forces are deployed in a distance about just a mile from the strategic airbase.

The ISIL Takfiri terrorists have besieged the Kuweires airbase for over 2.5 years now, but the base itself is under the Syrian army's control.

Hundreds of Syrian forces are under a tight siege at the airbase as a result of the occupation of vast areas surrounding the airport by the terrorists.

The Syrian army's helicopters supply foodstuff and other needs to the Syrian troops defending the airport.

Fierce fighting as government convoys defy Isis and Nusra forces

VITAL supply convoys began to reach the Syrian city of Aleppo this weekend as fierce fighting continued in the province.

Four civilians — including a child — were killed in the city yesterday when a rebel-launched artillery rocket fell on a residential building in al-Neel street.

Three people were also injured by the rocket launched from the Bani Zeid district. Four more were injured on Saturday when rockets hit al-Ashrafiyeh district.

Prime Minister Wael al-Halaqi said on Saturday that the government had been working to support Aleppo’s two million inhabitants since the Syrian Arab Army cleared the supply route to the city of rebel forces last week.

Hundreds of tankers carrying much-needed heating fuel for the cold Syrian winter, along with petrol, household gas and dozens of lorryloads of food have arrived since Thursday.

Fighting continued against Islamic State (Isis) in the east of Aleppo governorate and the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra Front in the south and west.

Syrian jets pounded Isis positions in Sheikh Ahmad south of the besieged Kuweires airbase, as the army and allied forces edged closer to breaking the two-year encirclement.

Nusra Front websites acknowledged the killing of one its leaders in Aleppo, Faisal Sharif, nicknamed Abu Omair al-Ansari, by army forces and Lebanese Hezbollah guerillas.

On Saturday army and Hezbollah units liberated the village of Kafr Haddad, just 15 miles away from the stronghold of Saraqib in Idlib province.

The army claimed that scores of rebels were killed in the weekend’s fighting.

Hezbollah and Iranian military advisers have been supporting the army and national defence forces militias in Aleppo, where they have liberated 100 square miles of territory in the past week.

Meanwhile, a conference in Damascus on Saturday called for wide participation of democratic forces in decision-making processes.

The Together to Damascus 1 forum saw participation from leaders of several parties, MPs, clan chiefs and civil organisations.

National Reconciliation Affairs Minister Ali Haidar stressed the need for participation by all components of Syrian society in national projects.

i'm thinkin' that military supplies aren't being reported as, even infantry privates know, one doesn't broadcast one's "beans, band-aids, and bullets " report explicitly.

Does any one know highest ranking US officer to be lost during the Iraqi operations I don't think it was higher than a full Bird colonel
Dtulsa there is a major difference in organization between the US Military and the forces and Organization of forces in Syria.
US Forces use a less centralized Command structure with General officers taking a more Bureaucratic role well Officers like Colonels and Lt. Colonels and Majors operate as Field commanders. A major factor in this is the US NCO corps who take roles more often ascribed to officers in many other Armies. Add in Communications and It means that O6 Paygrade and above rarely are needed in the field.
For the record the highest ranking officer lost in operations was Lt. Gen Greene in Afghanistan other then him it's a Rarity to find a US casualty ranked higher than Lieutenant Colonel

Unfortunately I don't have time to follow this conflict with any regularity,so whose winning.
well, as there are three, mutually hostile (supposedly), belligerents, at least, it's possible that two could be winning against one and one of those two winning, and another losing, against the other. if any of the three could be said to be sitting pretty, it's the Kurdish coalition. of course, that's unless you include Turkey as a fourth belligerent.

put simply, it's complicated!

The last time a British King commanded his army in a battle was 1743, George II at Dettingen. (
