Looks like the complex dynamics of this situation are beginning to obtain,

Vladimir Putin defies West as Russia bomb 'Syrian rebel targets instead of Isil

Something's telling me that Iraq, and northern Iraqi [Kurdish] airspace, in particular, will soon become an arena of intense political, and potentially, military conflict. Are we witnessing the initial stages of a significant international conflict?

I hope not. But the Russians can act on the notion, to borrow from The Bard, that a terrorist under any other name can die as well, while the US must be careful that they don't kill one of the few remaining "rebels" they sponsor.
I wonder, what if the Iraqi government asked US to stop because it doesn't think US is doing any good and it has more trust in Iran, Hezbollah and Russia?

This is precisely what I'm suggesting. If this is the case, I doubt that those who actually formulate US foreign policy will be willing to concede the objectives they 'achieved' through their war in Iraq without a fight.

Well Vlad made his intent quite clear if we only listened.
"We should finally acknowledge that no one but President Assad's Armed Forces and Kurd militia are truly fighting the Islamic State," He said it that mean he is intent on three fold with his operations.
1) Russia intends to back the Assad regime and will not stand for any anti Assad force. Hence there demands that the US back off.
2) Any and all Anti Assad forces are to the Russian view ISIL. and in his view subject to prosecution via lethal force from Russian power.
3) He does not specify which Kurd Militia or groups are in his view fighting ISIL and is likely to shift his forces on to the attack against any Kurd forces that appear to be shifting against the Assad state either in the move to a autonomous state or actively. this last part indicates that if Iran and or Turkey ( assuming joining) wishes they may come under Russian fire.

I wonder what would happen if the rebels shot down a Russian jet or helicopter with an American-provided SAM ala the 1980s in Afghanistan.

Maybe, 24 hrs Redundant Layered Drones Patrol will take care of that ?
If Syria did ask for China help, then China can supply their drones ( many CH-3 and CH-5 ) UAV to patrol all ISIS territory watching for unusual ground movements.

CH-3 and CH-5 drones for the highest layer patrol.
Cheap Hexa Copter smaller drones for the lower layer.
And, definitely share all the incoming ground data directly with Russian and Syrian Forces.

Let's see if ISIS & Uighur terrorists can handle these 24 hours day and
night * IoT M2M patrol.

But, I am no expert -- please feel free to correct me.

That kind of reminds me of another thread I had created a while back. How feasible would it be to create hundreds of thousands of small, autonomous drones and use them for recon and surveillance?

I read yesterday in Zero Hedge that Wall Street Journal accused the Russians of bombing moderate Al Qaeda rebels! It is necessary to make the West of Syria save before it will be possible to clean IS from the remainder of the country. I'm sure Netanyahu was told when he was in Moscow a few days ago that Al Qaeda will be cleaned from Golan and that Israeli interference would not be accepted.
