ISIS/ISIL conflict in Syria/Iraq (No OpEd, No Politics)

is called "Sanoubrat" in non-Government sources, which expectedly :) claimed it had been retaken yesterday (picture, not a video, from a drone available, so I won't post ... it wouldn't be problem for pro-Government sources to show they're on the hill, right?):

without following the development much, I think the sides got/lost that hill not just once during recent days; now the Government holds it, is under the attack ... according to what I read moments ago from both pro- and non-Government Twitter accounts

(related to Iraqis trying to retake Fallujah)

oh man ... now I saw claims (including one video which was enough: I'm eating a cake right now) of Shia Militias, who take part in the attack, committing atrocities against the civilian population of Fallujah, and Sunni "tribal" Militias, who had taken part in the attack, leaving the area as a result ...
... and of course nobody believes me ...

now, according to DefenceNews: Pentagon: No Done Deal with Russia on Syria

If we had a strong President, old foggy bottom would be told to get its attack together and make this happen.

If we would work with the Russians, we could at least resolve, and rather quickly IMHO, the extreme Islamic faction of these rebels...particularly ISIS.

That's what needs to be done...and if we can work together with Russia and Syria to make that happen, we might find a path to seeing some movement and allowances for our Kurdish allies in the area in particular.

Seeing that US couldn't curb its own personnel in the prison of Abu Graib ....
Oh please...what happened there is not worthy of being compared to these atrocities.

I mean really, making a guy wear panties on his head and such.

Let's not try and make political points regarding these atrocities...okay?

Any more of that type of thing will lead to moderation, deleted posts, and ultimately suspensions.

There is really no need for it.

Turkey, Ankara-backed rebels launch op to retake Syrian town from ISIS
Published time: 24 Aug, 2016 03:39
Edited time: 24 Aug, 2016 04:05

Ankara has begun a military operation with the aim of retaking the Syrian town of Jarablus from the hands of the Islamic State (IS, ISIS/ISIL), state-run press agency Anadolu Agency reported. The Turkish army is reportedly backing Islamist rebels fighting IS.

Turkish military employed intense artillery fire against Islamic State fighters in Jarabulus, officials told the Turkish media.

The troops managed to get close to the town quickly, with reports saying that the troops are just 5 kilometers away.

The operation is receiving air support. The Turkish air force has hit IS targets in northern Syria, according to Anadolu.

“Operation in Jarabulus aims to prevent new flows of migration, deliver aid to civilians, clear area of terrorist elements,” the news agency tweeted.

The military advance began at around 4 a.m. local time.

The decision to move in on Jarabulus is said to have come after a number of mortar bombs hit a residential Turkish area near the Syrian border on Tuesday morning.

But other reports have pointed to the fact that it comes at a time when a US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters is also making a push toward the border town.

The Kurdish-led force has taken full control of nearby Manbij by driving IS militants out of the city, which was used by terrorists to smuggle weapons and goods.

Ankara has been concerned over the autonomy of Kurds in Syria as Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) of the Democratic Union Party of Syria (PYD), with the help of American-led airstrikes, continue to capture vast swathes of territory in northern Syria, which borders Kurdish-dominated southeast Turkey, where Ankara has engaged the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in a brutal military campaign for over a year.

Turkey has repeatedly stressed that it would not tolerate Kurds staying west of the Euphrates River, with YPG-PYD advances in northern Syria remaining the key security issue for Ankara. The Turkish government has labeled both groups as terrorist organizations, despite their fierce efforts in fighting Islamic State.

I'm not comparing what happened. I'm commenting on the inability of the US Army to maintain discipline in one of its prisons and suggesting that it is bizarre to expect it to have any control over Iraqi militants.

have three comments:
  1. apparently it's started; the most recent related picture I found in Twitter (purporting to show a Turkish armored column in northern Syria):

  2. Russians have been informed it's started, says РИА:

  3. Kurdish Twitter account says "ISIS controls Jarablus & Turkey did nothing for years. Now Kurdish led SDF advanced to Jarablus, Turkey suddenly wants to fight ISIS there."
EDIT
related to #1 above: it seems they entered around 1100 hours of local time ("they" looks to me as Rebels on pickups, Turkish SF, and a Tank Battalion); interesting pictures right now available from

First of all, just to respond to Jura's quite silly comment about Government forces in Al Hasakah
Two words - Deir Ezzor - nuff said

Al Hasakah was of course resolved by a deal brokered by Moscow (similar to other deals brokered with now gone rebel enclaves in the West of the Country).
Clearly Al Hasakah was not viable if contested and as mainly composed of NDF forces, not exactly front echelon either. Further of course, a very clear provocation from an aggressive External Player.

Damascus have clearly been convinced that it is not worth the risk or effort of opening a new remote front and that the forces there can probably be put to better use elsewhere.

Given the situation building in the North, they are probably all the better for being out of it.
Turkey is now openly in Northern Aleppo telling the Kurds to retreat across the Euphrates and the US is telling the Kurds that they want them to go to Raqqa and not Al Bab (and beyond).
The Kurds are equally, clearly not listening to either of them.

This is significant as now not only are Turkey and the US in a genuine stand off (any guesses for the response if Turkish ordinance hits US Advisors?) We now have a Turkey that is no longer seeking Regime Change in Syria and presumably pulling its backed forces out of Southern Aleppo and Idlib (otherwise where else have these much quoted 1500 rebels come from)
Does this mean a critical decoupling of Turkish backed militants from the former Al Nusra?

If the Army of Conquest simply becomes a new banner for AlQidea only affiliated groups, the Syrian Government will effectively get a free hand in the Aleppo while a new three battle rages north of their lines and; to all intents and purposes, beyond their care.

What can Joe Biden acheive today in Ankara I wonder? I see precious few carrots at the moment and I doubt Erdogan is going to cowed by the threat of sticks.

All in all a very sticky situation until the next major player decides to make a realignment.
At the moment all the US has managed to do is to consolidate and align the positions of Syria, Iraq, Iran and Turkey under a Russian banner, with the Kurds suddenly the new meat in the grinder. It may not be a position they relish for very long!
