Iran: Russia has stopped using Iran base for Syria strikes

By NASSER KARIMI
Associated Press

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Russia has stopped using an Iranian air base for launching airstrikes on Syria for the time being, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday, just hours after the Iranian defense minister criticized Moscow for having "kind of show-off and ungentlemanly" attitude by publicizing their actions.
etc. ... kinda confusing "guests" story LOL
hmm, seems you are the only one being confused.

And I quote
General Deghan, the Iranian defense minister.
"The Russians are interested to show they are a superpower to guarantee their share in the political future of Syria and, of course, there has been a kind of show-off and ungentlemanly [attitude] in this field."
The matching criticism from Iran as you pointed out.

"Therefore, it needed to refuel in an area closer to the operation. That's why they used the Nojeh base. But we have definitely not given them a military base."
They (Russians) used, But definitely not given.

None of the words from anybody, Iranian or Russian, or any reports (BBC as far as I know) could possibly "confuse" anybody except you. The bottom line is "use" =/= "possession". The very fact that Russia has to leave makes that fact very clear.

It is crystal clear to me and I am sure to some other members here. So far, you are the only one speaking confused. Are you really confused? Or just want to play confused?

I suppose there is some confusion in Tehran which will probably sorted out in a week or so because while Tehran and Moscow have different interests these are so close, and their opponents so powerful, that cooperation is valuable to both. Besides long term economic cooperation is also in the interests of both and of China and many other countries.

I agree. I don't think the usage of the base and other cooperation will be an one time thing due to your mentioned reasons. The "stop for now" (as the words by Iran) is just that "for now". The Russians may have been overly public about the matter, so was Iranian (together with Russian) media being overly exited of China's "joining" the fight in Syrian. Their publicities server certain purpose of them, it may not reflect the whole truth, NEITHER does the "stoppage" reflect the whole truth.

The annoyance to me is the "twisting" of what things really is. To me, renting is now owning, so simple. This is a common practice that I have seen from the mainstream media, and now in a respectful forum where I expect people being more honest and mature.

Just to add quickly, that AMD was reporting that the Tiger Force were back in the Artlillery College and that very close quarter was fighting was raging through the facility. At the same time that further ground had been gained in the Southern Aleppo Salient, further closing the door on the rapidly thinning ranks of the Army of Conquest.

Re the Kurds, I get a sense of the making of the deal brokered between Syria and Turkey by the Russians. (based on recent pronouncements from all sides) My guess it will boil down to the Turks relinquishing support for rebel groups in Idlib and Aleppo etc, in return for a near free hand along the Northern border.

Now that could get very interesting.

The faction sponsors want territorial consolidation by the factions so as to make for more affordable deeper and broader interventions however the factions themselves are both not quite sold and barely capable of such consolidation at high cost. It all sounds like more stalemate to me regardless of how the musical chairs play out.

That sounds like a good assessment. Good deal for both Turkey and Syria.

now, according to DefenceNews: Pentagon: No Done Deal with Russia on Syria
The US and Russia have yet to finalize an agreement on coordinated efforts in Syria, with Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook warning Monday that the clock is running on the window for those conversations.

“Contrary to recent claims, we have not finalized plans with Russia on potential coordinated efforts. Serious issues must first be resolved before we can implement the steps [Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov] discussed in Moscow last month,” Cook said.

“We are not there yet and the regime and Russian’s recent actions only make it harder to consider any potential coordination,” he added.

Kerry and Lavrov are scheduled for another round of talks starting Aug 26 in Geneva, with the goal of setting up some sort of intelligence sharing agreement in order to coordinate strikes against the Islamic State group, commonly known as ISIS or ISIL.

However, those conversations have become entangled with increased fighting in Aleppo, as well as an incident last week where US fighters were scrambled to intercept Syrian jets that were bombing near US forces.

“The United States remains engaged with Russia on all of these issues, but as our colleagues at the State Department have made clear, we will to commit indefinitely to discussions that do not lead to results,” Cook said.

Later asked if there was a set time when the Pentagon would seek to cut off discussions with Russia, Cook demurred, saying “we’re not going to put a calendar deadline on it… at some point, fi we don’t see progress, there’s not going to be a resolution here.”

The spokesman also declined to discuss what a Plan B might be if the talks break down between the US and Russia.

Speaking to reporters July 25, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said the conversations with Russia are based on necessity, rather than trust.

“They're not based on trust,” Carter said then. “They're based on a transaction and on mutual interest to the extent — and when and as we're able to identify that with the Russians.

“To the extent that Russia can align with US interests, we work with them as has been the case in Iran, North Korea and other places where US and Russian interests have aligned," Carter added at the time. "It's the alignment of those interests that Secretary Kerry's exploring. That's what it's about."

Quite. US is in favour of balkanizing Syria and perhaps Iraq. Russia, Turkey, Iran and of course Syria are opposed.

Chammal operation:
New French air raid in the heart of Daesh device Raqqah in Syria.

Sunday 21 August 2016, a French air strike hit a storage center and maintenance of heavy weapons to Daesh Raqqah, Syria.

The raid had four Rafale, Mirage 2000 and four of Atlantic 2. Ten SCALP cruise missiles hit and destroyed the center in the heart of territory controlled by the terrorist group.

This action comes after an intense week of strikes by French aircraft, as part of the international coalition in support to land operations by Iraqi and Kurdish forces near Mosul in Iraq. These strikes have destroyed many combat positions, weapons caches of explosives manufacturing sites and heavy weapons. They contribute to the battles preparation work for the times of Mosul in Iraq and Raqqah in Syria.

On 5 August 2016, anti-government forces from the Free Syrian Army and the Islamist coalition Jaish al-Fateh stormed and captured a Syrian Arab Army (SAA) artillery school facility during operations aimed at breaking the Syrian regime siege of Eastern Aleppo. The following day, rebel group Ahrar al-Sham posted photos of materiel in the facility’s ‘

and now Kurdish Twitter accounts say the Government lost Hasakah Prison (almost in the middle of its territory shown in the above map); if it was true (and I have no idea if it is, or it isn't, true LOL I would've liked to see the feed to the corresponding Headquarters), the map below approximately covers what would be left (very roughly one by two miles):

apparently it was true (now I saw a vid from inside of that jail, by the way in situations like this I wonder how it is with security, so that cons don't get out, somebody doesn't get in to lynch them etc.), so ... there'll be a break:
