ISIS/ISIL conflict in Syria/Iraq (No OpEd, No Politics)

It's not all about Syria or ISIS, guys.
Moscow took control over Persian Gulf for the first time since Gorbi and without violation of INF Treaty.

Qatar now knows that Moscow does not need to send a death squad to eliminate a hiding Chechen rebel leader.
Saudi must now think twice about oil price policies and attitudes towards Kremlin.

A missile boat targeting a carrier a thousand miles away.
Awesome.

Buyan class is the only ship that can launch missiles from VLS in the Caspian Sea

not entirely true, since "Buyan class" are 500 tons gun boats (Project 21630), while the Buyan-M (Project 21631) class features anti-land missiles, and you omitted the Dagestan (693), ship of a different class (Project 11661)

They have 2 x 4 VLS layout
do they really? they have one launcher like this:

So from 4 warships they have 32 missiles and they fired 26 of those ?
this was the official announcement

...
But they are tiny corvettes like max 1000 tons
...

while
... and I've also repeatedly said about several Western warships they're under-armed; I've even heard reactions here like Russian ships are over-armed ...

hmmmm....this must be very interesting for the PLAN. those awesome images of a cool russian corvette approx 1000 tons displacement firing cruise missiles against targets approx 1000 klms away. maybe china should build a version of it's 056 that can fire cruise missiles like them russians, and build lots of them. we always see destroyers or cruisers firing cruise missiles but seeing them done by corvettes in the caspian sea was spectacular.

It's a waste of money to do that unless you are suggesting that it be build for export. Corvettes offer little in additional firepower capacity when compared to destroyers and its much more cost efficient to build a larger capital ship vs. several smaller corvettes. The Russian navy is only using corvettes b/c it cannot afford and/or have the expertise in building a large navy of modern ships at the displacement of Destroyers or Cruisers.

I don't think the PLAN would be that impressed or interested.

If they really wanted to, they could switch out the C802s on their 500ton 022s and put in cruise missiles instead. Same with the 056 or any current operational PLAN ship.

Hell, if it really wanted to, China could park land based cruise missile launcher trucks on the deck of container ships and let rip and it would achieve similar results.

China is far more interested in well-rounded designs that can stand up to the best the rest of the world has to offer.

If China was involved in the operation, it would be firing cruise missiles from 052Ds, and would be able to fire far more such missiles that what the small Russian corvettes could hold.

What's more impressive, corvettes firing 26 missiles and needing to return to port to reload, or destroyers firing several times that number of missiles and still being able to remain on station and defend themselves against any threats?

Far from being a sign of strength, I see the fact that the Russians had to rely on corvettes as a sad sign how far their once mighty shipbuilding industry has fallen.

How many cruise missile capable FFGs and DDGs does the Russian navy have?

Although they do have SSGNs, and I did wonder out loud if it might not have been better for them to deploy one of them rather than that Typhoon.

SSGNs firing off dozens to hundreds of cruise missiles would be something that would impress and interest the PLAN. Although China will almost certainly develop their own rather than buy anything the Russians might have available for export.

The corvettes are fitted with launchers that are able to fire cruise missiles but that can't be there usual load out.

I just just heard the news on BNR, my favourite radio station, and it contained the news that Jens Stoltenberg, secretary general of NATO, has said that NATO might have to send reinforcements to the border between Turkey and Syria to help defend Turkey. The Turkish army is larger than all Syrian armed forces and terrorists together at 700 000 men. How will the main stream media bring this important news?
