Moscow, February 4
India would start receiving 16 MiG-29k fighters from Russia in 2007 for deployment on aircraft carrier “Admiral Gorshkov” undergoing refit.

Russia’s MiG Corporation has been developing 12 carrier-based MiG-29K single-seater fighters with multi-role capabilities and four twin-seater
MiG-29KUB combat-cum-trainer aircraft as a part of the $1.5 billion Gorshkov deal signed in January 2004.

“The serial production of the planes has already commenced, the work is moving ahead strictly per schedule,” Director General of RAC MiG Alexei Fedorov said here, allaying fears about a delay in the deliveries due to financial problems of the corporation.

Delivery of the first aircraft is expected in June 2007 before the upgrade of the Vikramaditya (formerly Admiral Gorshkov) aircraft carrier has been completed and the vessel is transferred to India. Deliveries of all 16 aircraft are expected to be completed by 2009

Thanks Scratch!:)

Seems to me that the whole project is running a little behind schedule. However I know the IN will make up the time and have a properly trained CV group when they send that ship to sea to be operational.

Safran submits bid to be partner in development of Indian fighter plane

NEW DELHI (Thomson Financial) - French group Safran has submitted an offer to the Indian government to be chosen as a partner in the development of a fighter plane, chairman Jean-Paul Herteman told journalists.

Safran is bidding to be the foreign partner for the engine of the future LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) Tejas, he said, adding that this will involve a 'complete transfer of technology'.

India's Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd is developing the fighter plane with the aim of launching it in 2011-2012.

Herteman was speaking after the inauguration of a chip card factory near New Delhi.

India to test submarine-based missile

Mon Feb 18, 12:59 PM ET

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India will soon conduct its first test of a submarine-based ballistic missile which can be tipped with a nuclear warhead, an official announced on Monday.

The experimental missile will be fired from a submerged pontoon, said S. Prahlada, chief controller of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

"We have completed all preparations for the first-ever test launch of the missile and are awaiting the government's nod," Prahlada told reporters on the sidelines of a major arms fair in the Indian capital.

The missile, named K-15, has a top range of 700 kilometres (438 miles).

If the test is successful, India will be capable of launching missiles from air, land, ships and submarines, and it will join an elite group that includes the United States, Russia, France and China, experts said.

The announcement comes two months after India's chief military scientist M. Natarajan said that New Delhi would test a ballistic missile with a range of 6,000 kilometres (3,800 miles) in 2008.

Prahlada said the K-15 missile, following its experimental launch, will be "integrated" with a nuclear-powered submarine that India is building.

He also said DRDO scientists would carry out another test of the 4,000-kilometre (2,480 miles) range Agni-III ballistic missile, which could hit targets deep inside China.

"We are just awaiting the weather condition to improve to go ahead with the test," he said, adding the missile would be deployed after two further tests.

Prahlada also announced that New Delhi had given the green light to a 625-million-dollar joint venture with Israel to build surface-to-air missiles for the Indian navy.

The DRDO's production chief said India's array of ballistic and short-range missiles were also ready for export.

Pakistan says India's missile projects could spark a potentially lethal arms race in South Asia.

Re: Indian Army & Navy news thread

Heres something i found interesting. Probably just another tactic Russia is using to get more money from India tho...cant imagine the Russians being serious about this.

Aircraft Carrier May Go to Russian Navy
The aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov will be delivered to the Russian Navy instead of going to India after modernization. A source within the Russian military-industrial complex told RBK that Russia and India are now reaching an agreement on changing the conditions of the 2004 contract for the ship's overhaul. Under that contract, India received the hull without charge on condition that it be modernized at Sevmashpredpriyatie. The value of that contract was $1.5 billion.
According to unofficial information, negotiations are currently underway to expand the value of the contract by about $1 billion. “That question is being worked out. If a compromise is not found with India, the aircraft carrier will probably be purchased by the Russian Navy,” the source said.

The Admiral Gorshkov was built in 1978 as the Baku. Its name was changed in 1991. It will be equipped with Russian-Indian Bramos missiles and Russian or Israeli air defense systems after modernization.

I don't think the Russians are joking. With all the oil prices, they can seriously buy back this ship.

And just throw the contract they signed with India out the window? If they do then how could they ever be trusted to fulfill any future contracts again? Itll totally ruin Russia's reputation as a military supplier...
