Kaplan supposedly was rather neutral a few years ago, now he's a lot more hawkish than most people. I wonder what happened to him.

he's been embedded for too long and now he feels that he owe's something
to the brass hats ...of course he owe's his country some honesty but that's something else...

He has always been a hawk, support US funds to Mujahadeen, supported and pushed for US going into the balkans, and did not take it to happily when his book was used for a reason to stay out of Bosnia from clinton. Supported the Iraq war (did not like US avoiding UN however), which he later rebutted saying we bit off more then we could chew. He has had mix critisms of rumfeld blaming him for Iraq but also supporting changes Rumsfeld is making in the military. Not to mention he has found the US military men and women some of the best company he has ever had.

This article is utter rubbish.

It's been padded with details about weapons systems but to say it's
important is nonsense.

1. I didn't realise Brunei was in Singapore...maybe I should tell my Brunian
and Singaporean friends

2. Ooo we need to have more bases in the Pacific...that's original...
we can get more bases by bribing the island states...and the chinese
are doing what in the meantime?...have you seen how successfully
Taiwan has been isolated...? I mean if the BEST america can offer
a country like Pakistan is 40 year old technology F-16's...comon
lets be serious...the UAE gave Pakistan $100 million with no strings
after the earthquake.

3. American bases in central asia...hello ?

Kaplan - as for his war on islam... :) the US needs to wise up...it's
stirring up a hornets nest

Ok I will repost you post for you.......Kaplan never said Brunie was in Singapore.

Wrong 1

Plus US offered Pakistan billions in aid over the years, Alot more then the UAE, and we are opening the way for better f-16s.....US congress sometime gets in the way however . So somewhat correct. But my reference was to the mig21 varient and upgrade China was going to use as a sell abroad aircraft. It is a good cheap well built aircraft, not as good as the f-16 but prob more bang for the buck though.

As for the central asian republics...there is a chance. Your proximity however makes it hard. But china did put together that central asian packed against the US soon after this article was posted. Likely a responce to US tactics.
Also Turkey has had startlying influence and success in trying to get cultural roots and economics roots with other turkish nations in the central asian area. Not to mention X turkish special forces fighting among Chinas Muslim separtist. US still has close ties with Turkey even with our past differences, no reason we could not assist them in that aspect (Minus Muslim rebellion part, but we did do well with the tibetians)

And as for our war on Islam, for a general broad statement like you tell me not to make. Yeh i can concer.

As for the Jungle training, hell who knows....If you ask me US should make better friends with Vietnam......They had the best special forces amongst all the communist block, see good learning experiance from them

You can imply something without saying it in so many word...eg
Fox news use the term 'some people say'...'people might say' ...when
they want to slander somebody without the legal implications :)

The billions offered were loans. The UAE money was aid.

Regarding Central Asian republics...do you know any central asians ? Russia and China have WAAAY too much influence.

Turkish influence is limited to training with whichever dictator is in charge. Turkey dosn't have any religious or cultural influence mostly because the turkish military is in denial about it's own religion and culture :)

Tibetans ? ...i didn't realise Tibet was in central asia...or that it had relations with Turkey...

Regarding the F-16's ...Musharaf is already being grilled by the army officer corp on Bush's recent visit..I think Musharaf's position is now looking increasingly untenable which is why he's going to have to upgrade relations with China and reduce assistance to america.

China is close and America is tooo far away...Vietnam is not going to antagonise China by allowing america to have a naval base. In addition if it does it can expect VERY little support from any of the south east asian countries the muslim populations of which will ABSOLUTELY oppose any american forces in the region.

Like i said before divide and rule dosn't work in an era of network communication

It must be exciting to be on board with either teams, US or China, with a whole world to compete for, unlimited resources, great challenges, dangerous opponent, this is the dream coming true for any true strategist...

I believe both sides want some form of cold war, not a hot war, as long as both sides understand each other well, and play by the agreed rules, the new cold war could last long and provide both sides peace and prosperity, while they can play little wars around the globe ...

well we all need to get out our copies of "Romance of the three kingdoms'
(I've just bought my copy) and start reading the Art of War by Sun Tzu &
by Sun Pin.

But remember there are more characters than just US and China involved.

Kaplan has the right to have his own opinions/analyses BUT he was incorrect in several of them. Inaccuracies must be corrected less they are perpetuated.

This essey is not about going to war with china, but how to set up a military relationship making each side less likely to go to war...it is long enjoy

You make this opening statement and then post an article entitled:

HOW WE WOULD FIGHT CHINA

Sorry, the irony and the juxtaposition is simply amazing.

MODERATOR'S COMMENTS: Gangle, you are new here. Apparently you know the rules well enough to try and avoid the consequences of posting China vs US War scenarios...but then try and interject just that sort of thing.

One of our other Super Moderators, Tphuang, was entirely correct to close this thread.

I am going to go one further and officially WARN you about doing this sort of thing.

Read the rules, and then abide them with exactness.
