ok with all those J-8 series, do they stand a chance in modern aerial combat? air superiority? and again, with the latest series of J-8, how good are they in their role?

I would say only the latest ones are viable for modern air combat. The ones with the large more modern radars and PL-12s. With good enough speed, they can be a threat to any upgraded 3rd gen or 4th gen fighter, so long as they use their missiles on stand off distances and avoid turning combat.

Its hard to get exact figures. But I would suggest combat planes are more than a thousand...

Somewhere like 1200-1500. Including bombers, trainers I think it would be estimated at 2,000-2,300.

Re J-8s. What are the standard air-combat weapons loads for the various models?

Again just a starting point:

J-8IIs have a total of six hardpoints in the wings. You can decide on whatever configuration you want except that the PL-12 or PL-11 isn't used on the outboard pylon. and the PL-8 isn't used on the innermost pylon.

KLJ-1 engagement range based on a brochure is about 75km, so Type 1492 would be higher.

Officially, the PL-8 range is stated about 22km, so its improved over the 15km of the Python 3.
