Hong-Kong Protests

When I was in ml China I noticed the decor/design/arts almost everywhere (esp. high end places) were Western (SG and HK is the same); non-Western more to be found at ancient sites, or low end places (else cheap quality or obviously inauthentic) so people don't psychologically link "Chineseness" with modernity, prosperity etc. The Japanese and Koreans infuse everything with their pre-Westernised culture: in SG many hold these in higher regard. the British propagated their culture and thence influence that way too. whatever your views on "changing culture" or whatever, stereotypes are a powerful psychological tool. The only way to undo the damage is a reversal of the hierarchy of opportunity with all forms of Chinese identity expression at the top.

I'm no expert on the subject of Singapore. What I'm familiar with is that Singapore's government policy has to take into account its multi-ethnicities. As a case in point, the use of an international language such as the English language as the nation's communication language is meant to be fair to all the different races. Mandarin is promoted to bridge the different Chinese dialects.

Imo, when it comes to the destruction of culture and language, the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia had the worst fate. The situation for them has now somewhat improved with the removal of the restriction of the practice of Chinese tradition and beliefs but they seem to have lost their ability to speak in their mother tongue.

If anything fear of retribution from the mob may keep the pro-China camp silent.

Actually, I thought that it's actually not in China's (and Hong Kong's) interest that the pro-China camp gets too vocal, or even start to form their own street groups and engaging in confrontation with the current rioters. Because doing such, will simply escalate the confrontation in Hong Kong and putting a even higher toll on the law enforcement/public security departments of Hong Kong. Right now, the best way is really to wait it out, and let the riots die down.

The rioters are plain stupid in disrupting public services, destroying shops and trashing the streets and the metro system. These might work to a weak-will government with no backing from an extremely powerful backer. HK is none of that. HK is just institutionally restricted from really after the rioters. This means that they can't effectively do any counter-attacks/counter-offensives, but it doesn't mean that they will relent or give up, like in Ukraine. They have the PRC and the CCP behind their back. This means the HK government have nowhere to retreat, they will have to stand their ground and tough it out.

This is why I don't blame Carrie Lam's government for their sluggishness. This is actually the safest and the most effective way to wear the riots out. The rioters are only tough in numbers, and it is economically impossible for those NED financial backers to sustain large numbers for a prolonged period of time. The best thing about HK is that it is NOT an industrial city, the backbone of city's economy, as well as its more valuable contribution to the PRC does NOT rely on a large middle-class/working-class going about their daily routine.

The rioter might burn some Mainland Chinese banks, but the main business of these banks are not in HK, they are in the mainland, so the damages are insignificant. If they really want to put a dent on HK/PRC, they will have to target the stock exchange as well as HK based banks like HSBC and Heng Seng. They won't dare to do that, because this will really turn people against them.

Exactly, and this guy is even worse as he is actively trying to make the dead body happen.

The guy is dressed in black like a rioter, has a face mask on, and is not dressed like actual reporters who wear glow vests and clear identification stating "press" so I would say he is not a real reporter. His behavior blocking the mandarin speaker's way away from the mob matches that of a rioter in this context, even if unscrupulous paparazzi also often use this tactic. I would love this guy to be identified in public and someone should interview him to see what he was doing.

So many people asking for his info. Credit goes to someone in yahoo discussion.

His name is Victor Mallet - Financial Times - a British man. He’s a freedom/democracies supporter. He deliberately closed the door and blocked the exiting. He was always ahead of the victim. I can gleemed from another video angle before the assault that he somehow shown a body language such as touching the mouth or nose to signal beating up the victim. Or maybe I am reading into too much, excuse me.

I am not trying to sound racist, but am really doubting that these modern day Brits and Americans can really control themselves and not descend into insanity while working as covert agents of chaos. Even Iraq veterans, which don't see nearly as much blood and death as a WW2 era marines fighting the Germans or Japanese, have a large chance of getting PTSD and other mental issues or even go insane. Today's people from the WASP countries aren't that mentally stable. They are way too sheltered, and have received a white washed education which paints this picture of a rosy-colored world like kid's cartoon. They go insane very easily.

This kind of guys could go insane with the power and violence they all of a sudden enjoys, and might turn into a deranged criminal in the future. Kinda like a dog that tasted blood and start to think it's a wolf.

I tried using the above Bltizo's suggestion of how to post images but it doesn't seem to work anymore.

on this occasion, I'm not going to go beyond the headline and link:

Finally, in the sane part of China, traitors get what they deserve. Flag-burners should lose their citizenship. He chose a foreign basketball team over his own country?? He can't even play basketball; the rockets would use him as a towel boy or ball cleaner and laugh at him all day if he ever pledged his undying allegiance to work for them for free.
