It is a legitimate escalation because Ukraine itself is fighting those it claims to be separatists, yet supports separatists in China. Any Chinese support of Russia would be legitimate, self defensive and aligned with Ukraine's own declared policy.
It would be legitimate normally, but the cost is to Chinas reputation in the MSM, every guarantee or promise China ever made will be attacked, and it could turn the tide against her just as she is about to win.
Edit. Russia has plenty of friends, many of whom buy things from China, if parts or weapons were to make their way to Russia from these third parties, I don’t think there is anyway to prevent it.

Even legitimate actions have costs. China is handily winning the broader cold "war", so there's no reason to unnecessarily put itself in a more complicated situation.
Agreed. Once those boomers are dead (and gen X needs to be as well, those wretched imperialists) the mantle will be passed on to millennials and eventually gen Z. The world is going to look like a very different place...
Think of it as how Russia use cauldrons on the battlefield in Ukraine. China is leaving a "diplomatic escape route" for adversaries. Should these adversaries "double down" on their stupidity, it would (and is) making these policy makers look foolish on both the World stage and more importantly, on the home front. Eventually the local citizenry will do all the work for you, saving you from shedding your own blood. This kind of tactic requires extreme patience which both the Chinese and Russians have. China wins regardless of what path these adversaries take.
As someone from Latin America, I take exception to that.
I mentioned this before but at this point the MSM will smear China regardless of what it does, the only thing that will change is the when.
You are basically asking for a Molotov-Ribbentrop with western media.
Currently all those smears are baseless, if China goes against her word they all gain legitimacy. China is never going to give up her hard won reputation.
Im not worried about Russia falling, they have nukes and Chinas close and legal trade relationship and huge market to fully support it. Russia should be able to develop quickly once sanctions are ineffective or gone.
If you don’t want to wait for Gen Z to take over then you need to win elections In the west. The MSM is the greatest obstacle to that, ultimately they have to be turned.
