They built their new carrier without the capability to utilize the F-35C. Now they are delaying the delivery by a year to add the capability. The F-35 is not a recent project. The aircraft became operational before the said carrier was laid down. And the capability to utilize it is hugely consequential considering it is the only VLO fighter US Navy can obtain.
