The balloon is almost certainly a SIGINT platform, so every second it is left in the air is time that the US is allowing it to gather more critical data, hence the urgency to shoot it down. Destroying it is necessary as a defensive measure.

And I don't think the US needs to justify shooting it down despite the military necessity to do so. It is an adversarial military platform operating in the US' national airspace for crying out loud.
Probably better to work with China to de-escalate the situation instead of turning into some sort of rallying cry against China. Lots of normally sane people are now saying that China is going to war based on this escalation and are claiming the end times but seriously, for an supposed super power, couldn’t they have shut up about it and simply go and confiscate the balloon quietly rather then go along with the neocon agenda for starting yet another war. If this is an adversarial platform, a mere balloon, then China has the right to blow up any US satellite going over Chinas air space if that is the logic to use, heck, blow up any and every U.S. ship from coming close to China because it’s American, it has to be evil. Also, why did they have to waste a missile from an f-22 to down a balloon, couldn’t a few bullets at a closer range from f-16 or lesser do the same job or is Americas tech really be as outdated as it truly seems to be.

David Goldman owns Asia Times. He's hostile to China but has a functioning brain.
I don't think David Goldman owns Asia Times, how did you find that out? He is an editor of Asia Times I believe.
This guy Uwe parpart is the chairman of Asia Times Holding, but he may not be the real/biggest owner behind Asia Times.

I recall him mentioning during one of his videos that he started it, but I don't have it offhand.

For a guy named "SinoSoldier," you sure love to regurgitate US propaganda talking points without a single hint of self-awareness...

Are you suggesting this?

Gotta admit, the cat looks kind of cool. Probably will buy one myself.

Will wear it the next time I go out for a stroll.

When I walk through the park, people will think I am playing that Pueko-man game.

Who would collect SIGINT in this day and age using a balloon? Someone is lying. So who, China or the US, is lying? Just remember, today is the 20th anniversary of this event:

U.S.' media circus did not occur in a vacuum. It happened after years of anti-China hysteria since the "Pivot to Asia".

This event is an ominous sign that politically, the current US-China relationship is even worse than the situation during the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union.
