Can someone explain the conflict between these two countries? Is it a border issue, historical enmity or some other reason?

AFAIK, it’s a pretty old dispute, having roots that date back to 1918 or something. It’s over a region called Nagorno-Karabakh, which is majority Armenian, but the soviets placed control over it to Azerbaijan. Obviously, the Armenians didn’t like that, and a war erupted in the 90s that Armenia won. It’s been simmering since, with flare-ups every now and then. It came to a head again in 2020, in a conflict that the Azerbaijanis won.
EDIT: also important to note that Russia backs Armenia and Turkey backs Azerbaijan. Now that the Russians are bogged down in Ukraine, it looks like the Azerbaijanis are feeling pretty confident enough to push for more.
Hope they also decouple from China at the same time

Maybe the Japanese are objecting to a U.S. -- South Korea alliance.
Frankly these two belong together to rot on a remote island.
...It's an island alright, but unfortunately that island is called Taiwan and has other people on it.
