‘Shift to higher gear’: Philippines’ Bongbong Marcos talks up closer ties with China

Philippines president-elect Ferdinand Marcos jnr said his country’s ties with China will expand and “shift to a higher gear” when he takes power, signalling intent to advance outgoing leader Rodrigo Duterte’s pro-Beijing agenda.
Marcos, who won last week’s election by a landslide, said he held “very substantial” talks by phone on Wednesday with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who assured him of support for his “independent foreign policy”, and agreed to hold more comprehensive discussions.
“The way forward is to expand our relationship not only diplomatic, not only trade, but also in culture, even in education, even in knowledge, even in health, to address whatever minor disagreements that we have right now,” Marcos said in a statement.
Marcos said Xi had expressed a desire to talking privately.

“We are both looking forward to having further dialogue,” Marcos said.
He said both of us should talk, without the others.”

At least five Chinese companies will have to stop work on Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project in northern Siberia by the end of this month, according to an industry publication, due to EU sanctions against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.
But one Chinese fabricator told the South China Morning Post that it remained “in close communication with the parties involved”, as the situation was “changing every day”.
"There is no final word on this matter yet,” said a source with Tianjin-based Bomesc Offshore Engineering, which is building 10 modules for the Arctic LNG 2 project.
But according to a May 10 report by Norway-based energy industry publication Upstream, the Chinese yards received notifications to halt work on modules for the project’s third train by April 29 and its second train by May 27, as a result of the European Union’s sanctions against Russia.
Citing sources, the report also said there were uncertainties over transporting some finished units from China to Russia.
Arnaud Pieton, chief executive of Technip, had earlier warned that sanctions could affect the project.
“The European sanctions now target LNG goods and technology and services more directly, I would say, making the execution of [Arctic LNG 2] more complicated, maybe even highly complicated,” Pieton said during an earnings call last month.

@Overbom bro EU sanction failed, it's either facing a riotous crowd with pitchfork or a regime change in Germany or the EU unelected bureaucrats. Russia gas for ruble is working and further sanction is a joke that other countries will not comply. If non compliances do occur en masses, it spell the end of the Western led world order.

@Overbom We're returning to become a normal country again, that is the message not coalescing with either blocs. It's funny that the so called Collective West that espouse democracy doesn't internalized the true meaning of such word....lol The combine forces of China and Russia had become the symbol of fighting imperialism, who can predict that 5 years ago, the Collective West leadership unduly self destruct, the hubris and condescending attitude is too hard to change that maybe god forbid a violent uprising is needed to cleanse the system.

I don’t think you can overlook the support he [Albanese] had from the Greens and the teals.
It’s critical the opposition leader Peter Dutton, who will be the opposition leader, will offer him supply to stop him going to the Greens.

Asked what a Labor government, with teals and Greens, could lead to, he warned “the devastation of most of Australia’s business and production”.

We’ve got to be sure we don’t become a province of China ... that’s what’s on the line, control of our nation and control of our infrastructure

So let me get this straight, they lost some of their safest seats because it's clear that moderate liberal voters wanted them to move towards the middle instead of going far right, and their solution is to put an even more far right guy in the leadership spot?

It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see it if pays off for 'em.
