If forums and blogs like these can influence decision makers, should we be more careful (as in more responsible) of the stuff we post?

Well what does that mean, more responsible? We post what we find. We're the first source in the Western world for new information on Chinese equipment; we were the first primarily Western site to confirm the 094 IIRC. So in that way we function as the gatekeeper for new Chinese military information passing from the Chinese language sites to English and to the Western public, along with the other major Chinese military sites.

But I don't know how we can "be more responsible", its not like we're on here telling lies or making things up. Really the most responsible thing we could do is make more information public I think, we can't engage in self-censorship.

This is a little "out there" but it is a real possibility that we might be used to disseminate disinformation. So as a community we should raise the level of proof required before people start excepting things.

100% correct. Finn you hit the nail on the head. Sinodefense is the first hand the source for PLA info in the west. I don't know how Dongfeng, tphuang and other gather the information they do..but they do put out an outstanding quality of information about the PLA forces.

I have refered many people to SD & SDF for information on the PLA forces.

Although I don't contribute any info about the PLA. I'm happy to be part of Sinodefense.

Now if one of our "know it alls" could get more info on the Varyag..You remember that ship?? The now stagnate PLAN CV project. Myself and others would be very happy!

I think what I meant is to be careful about speculation and opinion. I've seen too much that get passed on as "fact". For example right now in Hui Tong's site in his Z-10 entry.

"The first batch of Z-10 powered by PT6C-76C engine was delivered to the Army by the end of 2007. Futher production may depend on the availability of the indigenous WZ-9 engine. "

I don't really agree that any Pratt and Whitney engines went to the army Z-10s because the PLA know these engines and their parts can be embargoed. But nonetheless, statements like these, which seems to be more of opinion, word of mouth or rumor driven due to the lack of hard confirmable evidence, can get companies like PW Canada in trouble and start a bushfire you can't control.

Yeah, that's part of the problem I have. I looked at the stuff they quoted off me. The second largest story that they quoted off me was my analysis on "invasion of Taiwan by 2018". Com'on, you shouldn't be basing national intelligence on what an internet warrior thinks. Nobody can really say what PLA will have in 10 years. It makes have to be more serious about my posts now.

Tphuang, you're a superb blogger, and I dare say you're probably on par with many of the OSINTers in the professional intel community when it comes to the PLA.

I just got an idea. Tphuang should write a blog about how China is using trained killer whales as suicide bombers or something ridiculous like that and then the next report they have will say "Some sources indicate that there are unconfirmed reports of the PLAN undertaking a secret killer-whale based weapon system program". :rofl:

Given that marine mammals ARE used in naval programmes (for anything from protection against divers to mine-clearing), you have unhappily picked MORE likely story than some other. Excepting of course China lacks orca in quantity like America.

Perhaps a top-secret programme of migration-bird carrying avian flu?
